There is an incredibly simple Widget that does all of this and more:

I like this Widget solution because doesn’t “install” anything on your system and you can check all the code for bad content.

Back light is a nice addition to any Mac but it can’t handle certain screen savers such as downloaded one’s. That’s I use SaverLab. It far surpasses Backlight in many ways. Transparency effects in addition to having another screen saver or your desktop wallpaper in the background. Give it a try at http://www.dozingcatsoftware.com/

Probably just a frontend to running:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background

in a terminal. But pretty cool nonetheless.
