SIP is basically an Phone over IP protocol that allows for voice calling over the internet, kind of like Skype or FaceTime or similar voice and VOIP efforts. The Mac has some SIP clients, so if you need one you’ll find a variety of options.

One such SIP client for Mac is SJphone, which is a SIP client (softphone) that allows you to connect to a SIP server and/or another SIP client. One thing I really like about SJphone is its very simplistic interface and the ability to directly dial another computer.

If you are like me and are weary of signing up for yet another service online, SJphone is a perfect fit. All you need to start talking to your buddy, is to have two copies of SJphone running (one copy on your computer and one copy on your friend’s computer), it couldn’t be easier!

SJphone is not an application filled with bells and whistles, but it gets the job done in a very reliable fashion. Check it out if you’re interested.

If SJphone isn’t working for you or not going to cut the SIP mustard, there are other options too like Telephone on the app store

For Mac users it sucks since it still required Roseta, Why in this day and age do they not make it an universal app?

In English, “Free” is an adjective, not a noun . . . perhaps you were thinking of the vernacular, “freeby” :-)

  3. HappySpaceInvader says:

A tiny misunderstanding there… in English, the noun “free” normally means “free of charge”, and Skype most definitely conforms to that for general usage.

As for open formats… they’re fine for talking to your open-source-worshipping techie friends, but they lack the ubiquity that Skype has… and ubiquity is really the only thing that matters in the real world.

  4. Elephant says:

There’s little truly free about Skype. Free as in freedom that is. Use and support open formats if you want something that is really free.

  5. Skype are always Free.
    Cheers 2 Skype…

Yes Skype to Skype calls are Free and will always be Free.

    So Enjoy Skype!!!
