In English, "Free" is an adjective, not a noun . . . perhaps you were thinking of the vernacular, "freeby" :-)

A tiny misunderstanding there... in English, the noun "free" normally means "free of charge", and Skype most definitely conforms to that for general usage.

As for open formats... they're fine for talking to your open-source-worshipping techie friends, but they lack the ubiquity that Skype has... and ubiquity is really the only thing that matters in the real world.

There's little truly free about Skype. Free as in freedom that is. Use and support open formats if you want something that is really free.
