iTunes 9 brings sleek and refined GUI – sign of things to come for Mac OS X?

Screen shot 2009-09-09 at 1.03.38 PM Last week we wrote that some people thought of Snow Leopard as a disappointing upgrade because there wasn’t a new GUI included in it, specifically the ‘marble’ interface that has been speculated to exist for a while now. Those of us that have installed iTunes 9 may have noticed that the new iTunes application features a refined, shinier, and more modern looking GUI coating. Is this a sign of things to come for Mac OS X? I think it looks pretty sharp, so I certainly hope so. Until Apple releases a GUI update, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before a third party creates an app to spread the new iTunes 9 interface across the Mac OS X Finder, much like the Uno app did prior to 10.5. What do you think?

idk, there were plenty UI differences, for anyone who’s been using it since before leopard. Rounded edges, dark/transparent context menus, mirrored dock, no more brushed metal or pin stripes. The last two of which are one of the UI things they intentionally worked on, making it look consistent. Which I would surely hope they would at least attempt to make it look uniform before going about changing it all together. But largely these “changes” are all aesthetic. So what’s it matter, it doesn’t really make it any easier to use. Except for having darker options makes it easier to use in the dark. But i like having my UI brighter during the day too.

  2. Oh, thumbs up for that one, scot. Wasn’t aware of the option.

View -> Column Browser -> On Top; restores the old look and feel. Thanks god.

i used the three-column interface at the top quite a lot, the thing that they removed. especially when searching; and i heavily use personalised genres to organise my collection, now itumes wants to funnel me down the pre-set genres which are laughably inadequate. i think the new interface totally sucks, provides nothing new, removed useful functionality. if i had any alternative that would sync everything to my iphone and run on my mac, i’d be using it right now. lucky for my squeeze box i reckon. booo apple.

I think it should’ve gone much more towards the stacks/ hud look = darker.

The white background in album view is horrible too.

@neko: I agree with you. Its a bit too shiny and glossy for my taste. Besides, i thought they’ll be going the darker route with the interface, knowing that Snow Leopard now sports darker shades of gray and even black for the dock menus etc. Now, iTunes 9 when opened side by side with other windows is out of place. Another confusing interface step for Apple on this one.

Other than the interface, iTunes 9 is a great update and i have a couple of favs from the additions that they applied.

i think the opposite. the gloss looks terrible and out of place. the other improvements are great, though.
