The problem with blackrain is that it seems to cripple the WIFI option, at least in my case. You need to reset the phone quite often and than it will be able to find the networks again and is very annoying. It is however by far the easiest way to get tethering back.

DistortedLoop, I hate to nitpick, but when a phrase is constantly misused it loses its intended meaning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_growth

I highly doubt there would an exponential increase in data usage.

I'm sure AT&T is looking to charge additional fees for tethering when it becomes officially available, but that's not what's holding them back. How hard can it be to come up with a price and a billing method? After all, they already offering tethering on other phones, so the pricing model and billing are already in place.

More likely is that their network won't be able to handle the traffic, and they're terrified that the destruction of their network reliability will end up driving folks to Verizon if/when the iPhone comes to that network.

Tethering will eat up data at an exponential rate compared to iPhone general data use. I speak from personal experience here.

I have two iPhones on a family plan. I use one exclusively for tethering, the other for typical iPhone data usage. The iPhone I don't tether with used 500 megabytes of data according to my AT&T bill. The iPhone I tether with used 5.5 GIGAbytes.

I imagine my usage pattern would be typical geek usage unless some capping is put in place.
