Bring Back the Classic Safari Refresh Button in OS X

Jun 10, 2010 - 4 Comments

Safari_Icon As many loyal Safari users already know, the dedicated “refresh” button was removed from the browser’s toolbar starting with the release of Safari 4. It seems that Apple decided it would be better placed at the end of the location bar. The “new” format also includes a much smaller button which quite frankly is much harder to get to and easier to miss.

Now that Safari 5 has the ability to use Extensions, you can bring back the classic look and feel by enabling the the “Safari Reload Button” Extension.

Enable Developer Mode in Safari
Safari may need to be relaunched
Go to the Safari menu » Preferences » Advanced. Turn on ‘Show Develop menu in menu bar.’

1: Enable Extensions
Necessary to load extensions
From the new ‘Develop’ menu, select ‘Enable Extensions.’

2: Install the refresh button extensions
If you follow the above steps, the Preferences menu will include a new “Extensions” tab where you can manage Safari extensions. Navigate to the new tab and download the “Safari Reload Button” extension.

3: Enable the button
Right click on Safari’s Toolbar (or go to the View menu) and choose ‘Customize Toolbar.’ You should now be able to place the button wherever you wish!

Now you have the old school refresh button in Safari again.

Safari is really just a pain in the Bum. This refresh prob is just one of many reasons I never use it. Firefox for me any time

For 4, since apple got stupid and removed it, a japanese developer used a SIMBL hack to reinject it. On 5, I am told it’s pretty much the same since the buttons themselves are well documented/code out there and you just change the actual delegate action. If this made sense and you’re not afraid of “not doing it the Apple way”, google around and you’ll find it.

Using Safari 5, I can enable the extensions tab, but when I open it, there are no tabs, ‘new’ or otherwise. There is only a checkbox to enable automatic updates. I cannot find anywhere to download new extensions…What am I doing wrong?
