iPad Car Mounts

Want to mount an iPad in your car? You can install an iPad onto your dashboard for easy access, this is a great idea that will surely improve the time you spend in traffic. I’ll cover two solutions here, one is a car mount kit that is probably the best solution on the do-it-yourself market, and the other is a cheap no-frills hack that gets the job done on a tight budget.

The Best iPad Car Mount

The most professional looking (see the above picture) yet easy to install option looks to be the Padholder iPad Car Holder, it is a universal fit and claims to install seamlessly into any car dashboard without any visible screws. This is probably the best product on the market for a do-it-yourself solution, and the manufacturer claims you can install the kit in 5-25 minutes, not bad.

The Padholder iPad Car Holder Universal Fit costs just under $150 and includes free shipping from Amazon.

The Cheapest iPad Car Mount

For a cheap and easy iPad car mount (or anywhere for that matter) just use Velcro. This is more of a hack than an official car mount kit though. A good iPad case with some velcro strips allows you to attach the iPad virtually anywhere, including your car dash. The versatility of iPad and velcro idea made the internet rounds earlier in the year with a catchy video but it’s a genuinely decent and very cheap solution for easy mounting in the car, or anywhere else you can stick some velcro. The main downside to this approach is that it is dependent on your car dashboard, and it makes it more difficult for the driver to access the iPad.

Velcro strips are about $10 for a pack that is of industrial strength and you’ll want to use a cheap iPad case as well so you don’t have to stick the Velcro strip directly onto the iPad. All together cost for a cheap case and some strips is about $15-$20, not bad!

The picture below is of an iPad installed on a car dashboard with velcro, they aren’t using a case though which I think is a mistake since the Velcro adhesive is then applied directly to the iPad.

There are some other solutions that include windshield mounts that use suction cups to stick the iPad to your windshield but they are rated so poorly that I don’t really consider them a viable option yet. There’s also a few limited kits that install the iPad mount into a cup-holder, one of my colleagues had a cheap model of these and his iPad repeatedly fell down with use, not good.

Explore some of the other options out there, but I think if you are serious about an iPad car mount just go for the Padholder iPad Car Holder. At this point, it looks like the best kit I have seen.

anything with even the possibility of distracting a driver today is insane, given todays traffic.

I love the idea but in California we get a ticket for using a cell phone while driving, I bet iPad use would fall into this category as well.
