Dota 2 for Mac coming in 2011

dota 2 for mac

Dota fans will be excited to hear this one; Dota 2 is coming as it’s own independent game on the Mac and PC platforms in 2011, and it will be distributed through Steam.

The press release from Valve is brief:

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Dota 2, a massive sequel for one of the most played games in the world.

Coming to the PC & Mac in 2011, Dota 2 promises to take the unique blend of online RTS and RPG action that has made Dota popular with tens of millions of gamers and expand upon it in every way.

You can read more about the announcement at GameInformer, who managed to score an exclusive on the game, although there are currently no screenshots or gameplay videos to share of Dota 2 so it’s graphics are currently a bit of a mystery.

Dota stands for Defense of the Ancients, which has been an extremely popular custom map in Warcraft 3 and has given birth to it’s own sub-genre of gaming: Action-RTS. To say it’s popular might be a bit of an understatement, there are thought to be roughly 6 million active players of the game at any given time, and there are worldwide contests with significant cash prizes for the top DotA players.

It’s a bit strange to me that Valve jumped on this considering all of the existing gameplay is through Blizzard’s BattleNet with Warcraft 3. Maybe Blizzard didn’t think it had mass market appeal or just wasn’t interested in developing the game as it’s own independent product?

Regardless of the back story, this is all great news for gamers, as Mac gaming keeps on cruising along!

As a member of DOTA Official, I am pleased to announce that this rumor is false.

Mac is not capable of handling warcraft 3 frozen throne. Our testers have worked this out numerous times and the game continues to crash.

It would be best if all dota users continue to use PC for dota.

    Cheers!

That is blatantly inaccurate on numerous levels, but more importantly, Valve disagrees with you.

So much fail in this post.

      1. “As a DoTA Offical, I am pleased to announce that this rumor is false”.

No developer would ever be pleased to leave out a type of game console ever. That’s already a big fail.

      2. “Mac is not capable of handling warcraft 3 frozen throne. Our testers have worked this out numerous times and the game continues to crash.”

I beg to differ, I have it on my Mac and my PC, it works fine on both, the game doesn’t crash in anyway, so once again you fail.

      3. “It would be best if all dota users continue to use PC for DotA”.

If macs “crash” anyways, why tell them to use their only option? You seriously haven’t thought this through. Get out, you failed hardcore. Go back to 4chan.
