Installing more RAM in your Mac is one of the best ways to boost system performance. What’s better than just a RAM upgrade? A great deal on a RAM upgrade!

For a limited time, Buy.com has an 8GB memory upgrade for only $119.95 including free shipping, this is the cheapest price I’ve seen on an 8GB RAM upgrade yet.

Kingston Apple 8GB Kit (2x4GB) for $119.95 with free shipping at Buy.com

Update: The Buy.com deal expired, but Amazon has the same Kingston Apple 8GB Kit for sale for about $130, which is also a great deal.

The upgrade should work for any Mac that allows 8GB of RAM and accepts the following type: PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM. This would include the new Mac Mini, iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro 13″, 15″, and 17″ models.

For price comparison, Apple offers 8GB upgrades for the MacBook Pro at $400. The next cheapest price was on Amazon at $135, and Crucial.com offers 8GB upgrades for $167.99, which makes the $119.95 price from Buy.com a truly great deal.

If you’re not sure, find out how to tell if your Mac needs a RAM upgrade. Most Mac users see a speed increase from adding additional memory.

Bought it, went like these, my roommate took a 4GB unit and combined it with his 2GB unit, i took one of his 2GB units and put both the 4GB and the 2GB on my macbook(late 2008)(aluminium) so we both ahave a total of 6GB, and it is woirking surprisingly well so far, despite the mixture of memory…

My buy.com order arrives tomorrow! :) Much thanx for this! I’m most curious to see how much better Parallels (w/Windoze 7) runs on my MBP.

Is this compatible with non apple computers too? I have a Macbook and want to upgrade the RAM, but my laptop only accepts a maximum of 6GB so i wanted to buy this kit and go half and half with my roommate and each of us takes one of the sticks, but he has an ACER laptop and it is compatible with DDR3, i wonder if this works for him too?

The upgrade should work on any type of computer that accepts PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM, whether it is a PC or Mac.

Check before you buy, but they have a good return policy so if it doesn’t work, just ship it back.

I have bought Kingston and Crucial before and both work great. For $120 this is going to be impossible to beat into the near future.

Both are good Digerati. I just installed Kingston ram yesterday. My late 2008 unibody MBP has now a 4GB and a 2GB ram for a total of 6GB which is the most allowed in my version.

Beware, not all macs allow 8GB of ram

Take it from me, an Apple Service Provider for over 5 years and a CIO of a law firm that is all Mac, the Mac is only temperamental with RAM that is failing. Almost all RAM comes with a 3 year if not a lifetime warranty. Always store the receipt for the RAM in a safe place and if it ever acts weird, swap it out. I have no problem putting my reputation on the line when it comes to 3rd party RAM as long as you are smart and save the proof of purchase.
In terms of which is better, as long as clock speed is the same and it’s made for your computer, it’s meeting the requirements (maybe barely but it still is) from the manufacturer. I always get whatever is cheapest for myself and my coworkers without issue.

  7. Digerati says:

Which is better, Crucial or Kingston memory?

  8. Brian says:

The only problem with this deal is that Mac’s in the past have been really temperamental on what RAM you install in them.
