The back of the iMac was removable, and held in place by two plastic tabs at the top, and three screws at the bottom. The plastic tabs were known to break if someone picked it up and carried it by the base/stand. Later model iMacs (post early 2006) did not have the removable back and could easily be carried by the base/stand. Also, the back would not always snap back in place properly, and again, weakened the plastic tabs or in some cases, didn't catch them at all, so a gap would be visible across the rear top edge, just waiting for someone to grab it by the foot and topple into the floor.
