I would add that my hosts file contains just one entry:

localhost 127.0.0.1

Also, my phone was not jailbroken.

I had this problem during my recent iPhone4 update from 4.3.3 to 6.1.2. I tried updating half a dozen times, always failing during the Verification stage.

I solved it by changing a setting in my router, an old WRT54G. The setting:

Under Security->Firewall, there is a setting labelled “Block Anonymous Internet Requests”. Once I unchecked the option, the update was able to proceed. It still took a long time to complete the update, but it no longer was getting stuck on the Verification stage.
The setting might exist in your firewall (hardware or software) with a different name. The WRT54G help refers to the option as “Block WAN Request”.

Not sure what to say but thank you so much. Let me break down my steps to benefit those who couldn’t get these steps to work. It took me 3 hours of trying each combo of things and nothing worked. Tried and failed many times before this worked for me.

1. Exit ITunes (This is important)
2. Update “hosts” file to #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com (need to include that # sign)
3. Open ITunes
4. Hold both sleep and power button until ITunes recognizes the Ipod is in DFU/Restore mode.
5. Click restore and it should run and fix your Ipod

It worked….all we need to do is to save the hosts file while having iTunes closed..

All i had to do was put a # in front of these 3 at the bottom and save it and it worked
#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
#74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

IT WORKED!!!

What I did was removed the last 2 number lines and replaced it with the line ‘#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com’ and saved while iTunes was closed.

Opened iTunes, put phone in DFU, iTunes identified ipod in recovery mode, went ahead and clicked “Restore and Update.”
