Jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 with Redsn0w (Guide)

May 6, 2011 - 57 Comments

Jailbreaking iOS 4.3.3 is made easy with the redsn0w utility, if you’re not sure what to do then this guide will walk you through the process. The tutorial is geared towards the iPhone, but the steps would be the same for an iPod touch and iPad. This is an untethered jailbreak, meaning you can reboot freely without concern.

Requirements before starting:

  • Compatible hardware includes: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 GSM, iPad 1, iPod touch 3rd & 4th Gen
  • You need the latest version of iTunes (10.2.2)
  • Update your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch to iOS 4.3.3 before proceeding
  • Download Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15 (Mac & Windows versions available)
  • Download iOS 4.3.3 IPSW for your specific device
  • About 10 minutes of your time

If you’re familiar with redsn0w and jailbreaking in general, this new version is not much different, although you do now have the ability to enable multitouch gestures during the installation. All ready? Let’s get started…

Jailbreaking iOS 4.3.3 with Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15

  1. Launch Redsn0w and browse for the iOS 4.3.3 IPSW firmware file you downloaded
  2. Read the onscreen instructions and click on “Next” and let redsn0w prepare the jailbreak
  3. Select “Install Cydia” and any other options you want enabled, and click on “Next”
  4. Now you need to turn off your iPhone and connect it to your computer, when this is finished click Next
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to put your iPhone into DFU mode. They are: hold down Power button for 1 second, now continue to hold Power while holding Home button for 10 more seconds, now release Power but continue holding Home for another 15 seconds. When this is successful, the jailbreak will start automatically (You can read more about DFU mode here).
  6. You’ll see what looks like a console appear on the iPhone screen with gibberish scrolling by, this is normal and it indicates the jailbreak is installing. When finished, your iPhone (or iPod or iPad) will reboot automatically, and the device will be jailbroken

You can confirm the jailbreak worked by looking for the Cydia icon on your iOS homescreen.

Troubleshooting Redsn0w

Running into problems? It can happen, but they’re usually easy to solve. Here are some common issues and their solutions:

  • Redsn0w Crashes in Windows – For Windows users who run into problems with redsn0w crashing, you need to set the CPU affinity to 1. Run redsn0w and then hit Control+ALT+DEL to bring up the task manager, select and right-click on Redsn0w.exe, go to “Set Affinity” and check the box next to CPU1. Now proceed as usual.
  • Redsn0w won’t run in Windows – You need to run Redsn0w in XP Compatibility mode
  • Error 3194 in iTunes – you need to temporarily edit your hosts file
  • White Cydia Icon – temporarily perform a tethered boot with redsn0w, or re-add Cydia http://apt.saurik.com/cydia to Cydia sources
  • I hate it, how do I remove the jailbreak?Unjailbreaking is just a matter of restoring through iTunes, it is not a permanent modification.

Remember, redsn0w does not offer baseband preservation and does not offer an unlock. For that, you would need to use PwnageTool for Mac, or Snowbreeze for Windows, both along with Ultrasn0w.

That’s about it, happy jailbreaking!

With the phones that won’t let the apps work or internet work: I can’t say for certain in your situation, but when I first jailbroke my phone with iOS 4.3.5, it was required to be tethered. It got stuck like that, and the problem was fixed when I did a tethered reboot. I don’t know if it will work the same with iOS 4.3.3. I have been researching and attempting to downgrade to iOS 4.3.3 for 3 days and haven’t succeeded yet, but your posts have helped and hopefully it will be a success tonight!

download the firmware in firefox because windows makes it crash. it will automatically save as a ipsw

Make sure you are right-clicking the IPSW when you download it and choose “Save As”

The file is certainly not a ZIP, but you can try using another browser to download it or you can even just rename the .zip extension to .ipsw

  44. Duc Nguyen says:

multitouch gesture is the best part about this, no other reason to upgrade really

  45. Ian says:

Same as usual but I’ll stick with 4.3.2 so I don’t have to deal with backing up, rejailbreaking, redownloading, etc etc etc

I’m not sure why anyone even bothers upgrading to 4.3.3 right now, the media grabbed their tinfoil hats and got everyone paranoid that Apple is tracking them around the globe, conveniently ignoring all the tracking they volunteer themselves to in the form of Twitter, Facebook, FourSquare, Yelp, Google Maps, GPS, Android, Blackberry, and every other location aware product in the world. What do you think every ‘social’ app is if it’s not to track you? Think about it.
