This is a really dumb thing to do. The sidebar is used for easy and consistent file navigation, whether that be from the Finder or the open or save box in every application. This consistent and wonderful interface is what makes the Mac OS so appealing and can make it so easy to use when used appropriately (like defaulting to column view). If a user wants to use a Finder window to launch applications, the the top (Toolbar) part is the only part that should be used for this!

ANYTHING can be dragged to the sidebar - apps, documents, folder, whatever.

Selecting it from the sidebar does what you expect it to do if you double clicked it in the Finder.
