I just tried this. In the keyboard preference pane, double clicking didn’t allow me to edit the assigned f4 key press, but hitting return did.

My pre-Lion F4 key is now mapped to open Mission Control by default, I suggest checking your keyboard and perhaps mapping another F key to Launchpad.

I use launchpad constantly. It takes a little while to set up, but I find it very convenient. My dock is a lot tidier and easier to use since I started using launchpad.

Consider that you can also (re)map F5 button on your pre-Lion keyboard… I did and F4 is still dashboard and F5 is Launchpad. Which, btw, is pretty nice ponce I got used to it.

This hint is unfortunately flawed if F4 is mapped to anything else (it breaks byobu/screen when I remote into Ubuntu machines I manage).

Or you can remap it to something else entirely if you never use Dashboard or LaunchPad
