Linux Coming to the iPad and iPhone

Linux running on iPad

You’ll soon be able to run Linux on a select few iOS devices via a jailbreak hack. The port is being worked on by German iOS developer Patrick Wildt, and while it’s not entirely clear when Linux for iOS will be released, he is expected to unveil it publicly at MyGreatFest, a jailbreaking convention that is being held on September 17th.

Supported hardware is said to include the original iPad, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4th generation, but the iPad 2 with it’s A5 CPU is currently left out due to complications with the hardware.

Pretty geeky but cool find from iDownload Blog.

actually, OS X is unix based….and linux was designed based off of unix standards. GNU’s (Gnu’s Not Unix) Richard Stallman, proposed an open source operating system based on unix, but he didn’t have a kernel to control it all…….enter Linus Torvalds with his linux kernel in 1991, and history was made.

I Love how people who say that this is a waste of time or that Linux is going backwards most likely don’t know that OS X is a huge rip from numerous Linux another GNU developments or that Linux is FAR more used than any other operating system in the world. Ever heard of the world wide web, yeah any web server you go to more than likely uses Linux. Or the next time you are sitting at a traffic light, thank the Linux OS that controls those for keeping the streets safe. If it’s good enough for NASA, it’s good enough for me.

Why go backwards – what is next put a MS-DOS emulator on the iPhone and iPad – actually that might not required a jailbreak – if embedded in app correctly.

Backwards? Linux is a modern constantly-updated kernel/OS, every bit as advanced as iOS. Just because it ALSO includes a command-line interface – in addition to a GUI – doesn’t keep it in the same ballpark or even league as an obsolete system like DOS! I don’t extensively use any Apple operating system, so I would never presume to speak about them with any kind of implied authority…
