Siri for iPad 2 and iPhone 4 Are Coming Soon… Unofficially

Siri on iPad 2

Siri, the personal voice assistant that comes with iOS 5 on iPhone 4S, is being ported to both the iPad 2 and iPhone 4. This isn’t official from Apple though – at least not yet – it’s the work of several iOS developers.

First off, it doesn’t quite work yet, but considering the port has only been in progress for a day or two that’s not terribly surprising. Nonetheless, Siri’s UI elements have been successfully loaded onto iPad 2 and iPhone 4, indicating that it should run on both devices if the full port can be completed and some of the technical obstacles overcome.

Siri is most likely to first appear for iPad 2 since the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S share much of the same hardware, specifically the A5 CPU and GPU. You’ll almost certainly need a jailbreak in order to use this, which shouldn’t be challenging considering iOS 5 is jailbroken already, for one to transfer the Siri software over, and also to be able to spoof an iPhone 4S in order to access the Siri servers at Apple.

This concept first showed up yesterday on 9to5mac from another iOS developer, who posted the video below which shows Siri’s UI loading on an iPhone 4, but it’s unable to function due to the aforementioned lack of access to Apple’s Siri servers. You can see that video below:

The above iPad screenshot is from @SonnyDickson, who is working on the iPad 2 port. The iPhone 4 port is being worked on by Stroughton-Smith with 9to5mac.

It’s possible that Apple will eventually release Siri technology on the iPad 2 or iPad 3, and maybe even the iPhone 4 in an iOS 5.1 update, but for now it’s a key selling point for the iPhone 4S, thus explaining the exclusivity of the AI assistant to that device.

Reports are the Siri servers aren’t authenticating anything not from an iPhone 4S… http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/14/siri-voice-command-system-ported-from-iphone-4s-to-iphone-4-video/ I’m sure Siri will be kept a 4S only feature on the phones, but it’ll be interesting to see if it makes it to the iPad 2 or waits for the iPad 3…

There is a tethered jailbreak for ios5 out. I’m assuming that’s how theyve gotten this far with porting Siri

But iPad 2 has no jailbreak available for iOS 5, non tethered nor untethered. How it was posible?

Musclenerd already said it would require copying it over unless you already own the 4S too, this is pretty much DOA.
