No SIM Card Installed error on iPhone

The recently released iPhone 4S specific build of iOS 5.0.1 resolves an ongoing SIM card issue that was effecting some users. The issue would cause some iPhone 4S’s to not recognize a SIM card, with the iPhone reporting a “No SIM Card Installed” or “Invalid SIM” error message, in addition to the phone not connecting to a cellular network.

To resolve the error, users have two choices:

This makes the latest iOS 5.0.1 update a welcome change for iPhone 4S users who frequently encountered the problem, and this also answers the question as to what exactly the iPhone 4S specifc 9A406 build of iOS 5.0.1 aimed to accomplish. Thanks to MacRumors for discovering this.

Small piece of tape on side of sim card with ATT logo seemed to solve the problem for now. What is troubling is that Apple seems to have released a product with a significant hardware issue, and as of yet, has not done a single thing to solve or fix it. Just like with the antennae with 3G this is too rampant to not be “known” to Apple. My assumption is that they know it is a bad design, but cannot recall or replace all units so they’re trying to brush it under the carpet.

Did everything (tape, resets, remove SIM, etc) and nothing worked, did the reset and all is right in my world again…thanks so much! Very much appreciated!

this is not funny my iPhone went flat i charged it up and got this no sim card message – phone was not bumped, dropped or dirtied in that time – after some research I believe I will not be buying another apple iPhone nor recommending them to anyone

  4. Havery says:

I have the same No SIM ERROR on my 4S. Was on the phone with AT&T and Apple for 4 hours last night, no one was able to solve the problem. So dissappointed in the 4S, wish I never got rid of my 3G!!

  5. Pedro says:

I have the same issue, after the update and restore.
    It’s big problem for me.

    what about iphone 3gs

  7. i just got my first Iphone 3gS 6 days ago. Bought an otterbox .. and the darn phone has HAD No Sim error 2 times…
OMG, If I had an employee that did not show up 2 times in 6 days.. they would be fired.

Seems this might be related to the NEWEST update???
If this is a predominate, well known, chronic issue.. then phone service providers such as AT & T should not be allowed to hold us to a contract with a supplied phone that has known issues… your thoughts?

  8. Richard says:

I did all the steps mentioned and have the iOS5.0.1 9A406 installed. Un fortunately it does not solve the NO SIM problem. Iti immediately occured again.

  9. […] Never heard of the exact problem you are having. I have a 3GS, 4 and 4S in my possession and iOS 5 works great on all. Try restoring again, this time download the latest iOS 5.0.1, there was an update to the one for 4S due to a "no SIM found" issue. Not the same issue you are having but close, but afaik the fix was only made for 4S. Fix “No SIM Card Installed” Error on iPhone 4S by Installing iOS 5.0.1 Build 9A406 […]
