I tried dfu mode for downgrading, to 5.1.1 but it failed, but it found the latest 6.0 update which is downloading now! I had the misfortune of getting through all of it until I got to the iOS 6 beta setup part. That's where I discovered I shot myself in the foot because, well it told me that my device was not registered for the beta. Oh well. At least iCloud is there for me still.
