Change Widgets in Notification Center for Mac OS X

The Mac Notification Center gained widgets in OS X Yosemite, which are revealed when the Notification Center is opened and the “Today” view is chosen. This looks and functions a bit like Widgets in iOS, and these widgets range from World Clock, Calculator, Weather, Reminders, Calendar, Stocks, Social, and an to an iTunes widget, but they can include third party widgets that came bundled with other Mac apps too. To get the most out of Widgets in Notification Center, you’ll probably want to customize which widgets are shown or hidden to better suit your needs and preferences.

Modifying which widgets are visible in OS X Notification Center is not entirely obvious, you actually need to adjust the preferences for Extensions rather than Notification Center. Once you’re in the right place, it’s quite easy though:

  1. Go to  Apple menu and System Preferences, then choose “Extensions”
  2. Click on “Today” from the left side menu options
  3. Changing what widgets show up in Notification Center for OS X

  4. Check and uncheck the widgets you wish to show in Notification Center
  5. Alternatively, re-arrange the widgets by dragging them around in this same panel

Open the Notification Center again to see the changes. You can also leave it open while you make changes in the preference panel, though the Notifications Today view will sometimes need to refresh to show any adjustment made.

Alternatively, you can also* choose to open Notification Center in OS X, then scroll all the way down to the “Edit” option. The Edit button is not always visible for some reason, likely a bug. Thus the most reliable method is through System Preferences.

Do note the Notification Center widgets are completely separate from the Widgets contained in Dashboard, which can either appear over the desktop or function as its own space within Mission Control. There is some overlap with some of the particular widget functions like Stocks, but for many users they’re different enough to warrant both being around.

I seem to be missing something here. I have Yosemite (10.10.2) but the Notification Center widgets aren’t popping up. I know they must be in there somewhere! Or am I just not updated enough?
