iOS 8.3 Update Released with Many Fixes [IPSW Download Links]

Apr 8, 2015 - 166 Comments

iOS 8.3 final available to update

Apple has released iOS 8.3 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The software update includes 300 new Emoji icons, a variety of small new features, some minor user interface changes to keyboards, a variety of new languages for Siri, and a handful of performance fixes and optimizations, including resolutions to various wi-fi issues and Bluetooth connectivity. Full release notes for iOS 8.3 are listed below.

The iOS 8.3 final weighs in between 250MB and 1.5GB, depending on the device being installed on and the currently running version of iOS. You will find that iOS typically requires at least 2x that space to complete the installation, and if there is not sufficient space available you will be told to free up storage capacity on the iPhone or iPad.

Update to iOS 8.3

The easiest way for most users to download and install iOS 8.3 on their iPhone or iPad is through the Software Update mechanism on the device itself. Be sure to back up your device before attempting to install the software update, either through iCloud or iTunes, if not both.

  1. Back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  2. Open the Settings app and go to “General”, then to “Software Update”
  3. Choose “Download and Install”

iOS 8.3 download

The update will install itself automatically beyond this.

Another option is to connect the iOS device to iTunes and let that app complete the update for you. Updating through iTunes using a computer is also a way to update to iOS 8.3 if the iPhone or iPad does not have enough free storage space available to install through OTA. Just be sure to backup with iTunes before beginning that.

iOS 8.3 IPSW Direct Download Links

Those interested in installing iOS 8.3 from a firmware IPSW file can download the appropriate version for their device from the list below. These links are directly to Apple servers, you will likely want to right-click and choose “Save As” to download the appropriate file, being sure to include the .ipsw file extension.

iPad IPSW:

iPod Touch IPSW:

Using IPSW is considered more advanced. The majority of users should install iOS 8.3 through iTunes or OTA.

Troubleshooting iOS 8.3 Update & Install Problems

For most users, installing iOS 8.3 goes without a hitch, but there are a few potential hiccups that may be encountered, most of which are very easily resolved:

  • Not Enough Storage Available to Install? Delete some apps, free up storage space, or use iTunes and a computer to update
  • Stuck on “Download Requested” – Wait a few moments, if the download does not start after 5 minutes or so, the Apple Servers are probably overwhelmed by requests and you can try again later
  • Stuck on “Verifying Update” – wait for the verification to finish contacting Apple Servers, this requires an internet connection and can take a while when the updates are freshly available
  • The iOS 8.3 download says it will take 2 days to download!?!? Why is the download so slow? – this seems to be a network saturation issue that is impacting some localities when trying to install iOS 8.3 through OTA update. Waiting to download until later can be effective, as can updating through iTunes
  • The update is taking a really long time to install – have patience! Sometimes the update can stay on the  Apple logo screen with the loading bar for a very long time, seemingly not moving. Just wait it out, do not attempt to interrupt the iOS update process or you can brick your iOS device and require a restore
  • After installing the iOS update, my full iPhone will no longer sync with iTunes because there is not enough storage space free on the iPhone – this is a strange error, there is no solution other than clearing space off the iPhone

  9. Jon says:

My phone worked just fine until apple put there Trojan horse in there program and my safari stopped working. After 15 hours dumping 1000 pictures, many App’s etc. to get 3.5 GB ready for the down load. After 8.3 is installed everyday is a nightmare. The old program allowed passwords and names to be saved and auto filled to secure sites. New 8.3 will not allow this. 8.3 set my phone back 5 years. Also now when I’m signed in to secure sites I get ads like iTunes all the time. My old flip phone was better. Worst yet it takes longer to surf the Internet.

Thanks apple your 8.3 program is a failure and a daliy nightmare for me. You guys really let the world down thanks Apple.

    • Neo says:

It sounds like you need to unlock your iPhone to work with the carrier you are trying to use, whatever carrier it is locked to can unlock it for a fee usually, or you can use a service like ChronicUnlocks and pay them to unlock it for you: https://chronicunlocks.com/ but you would want to contact them first to see if it will work with your iPhone.

  28. Sergey says:

    Hi,

Well I’ve identified my iPhone as GSM, being A1457 according to Appple.

    ——————————————————————————– ————

Model number on the back cover:

    A1533 or A1457 or A1530: iPhone 5s (GSM model)
    A1533 or A1453: iPhone 5s (CDMA model)
A1518 or A1528 or A1530: iPhone 5s (GSM model China)

    ——————————————————————————– ————

Since I have a 8G/month connection, I was going to download the IPSW file to install on my iPhone and since it’s a GSM, I would need to install the iPhone6,1_8.3_12F70_Restore.ipsw, according to OSXDaily, but here comes my doubt. When I’ve upgraded from iOS7 to iOS8, I’ve downloaded the IPSW from a different site where there was the link to download a 5S IPSW and it wasn’t written whether it was a GSM or CDMA, so I did that upgrade, but checking my backup files on another disk, I’ve noticed that the file for iOS8 was called iPhone6,2_8.0…..

So, basically, have I installed CDMA 6,2 over GSM 6,1 and now I need to update with GSM 6,1?

    I’m pretty confused here.

  31. Sabrina says:

The update before this caused my phone not to connect at home to the wifi. The IOS 8.3 specifically stated it was correct that issue. I did it from home on my laptop, updates in my phone still will not connect at home and now my computer won’t?!?!

  32. Confused says:

I updated my iPhone 5S to 8.3 and since then I can’t find a network. I only just did the update prior to going overseas so don’t know if it would still work in Australia but it certainly can’t find a network in Europe. I used the same phone last year in Europe so know that it should have access. Have tried everything I know, any ideas?

  33. Sanjay says:

After completing the download, while installing i OS 8.3 on my iPhone 6 it’s asking for a passcode. What it is? I didn’t set any passcode. What to do? Any help?

    • Goodtimes says:

Enter the passcode you set to unlock your iPhone, you must set a passcode or it wouldn’t ask for one. Or put your finger on Touch ID.

  34. Dory says:

After downloading 8.3 on my I phone 6 I am not longer able to connect to internet even if it shows it is connected. I am not able to visit any web page.

  35. Ron Gould says:

Pas de problème here on iPhone 4s 8 Gb and iPad 32 Gb.

  36. Nikki says:

I just uploaded the iOS 8.3, but Instagram won’t even open. What can I do?

  37. Jennifer says:

I updated my iphone 6 no problem, but when updating my son’s 1st gen mini, I get the white apple logo and the progress bar. It will occasionally allow me to access the “normal” functions but if I let the screen time out, we’re back to the white apple logo progress bar. It completes, then starts over, then times out, then starts over, then complete and so on….
I’ve put it in “safe mode” (what’s it called? when you hold down the home and sleep until you reset) which allows me to wipe the iPad clean. Then when I restore using iTunes, I’m back to the white apple logo and progress bar mess.
I really don’t want to set up as new iPad because he’ll flip if I delete his Minecraft worlds. #firstworldproblems

I updated my 6+ this morning. I have two issues now that I did not before the update. 1) Facebook is not happy. Pictures will not load. 2) The wifi is wonky. It does not see one of my two wifi networks unless I repeatedly turn wifi off and on on my device.

I try to instal the ipsw from the link.
But itunes did not allow me.

Then, I start to download the upgrade from within itunes.
I realised that the ipsw downloading is actually on a different name.
The one from the link provided here, starts as iphone6,1_8.3.
When I download by itunes is iphone6,2_8.3.

Is there any particular reason for this?

I am asking because I would like to be able to go back to 8.2 if the 8.3 update keep me worse off. As it happened with previous updates.

    Thank you

      iPhone 6 Plus is 6,1

      iPhone 6 is 6,2

Download which you need, you can not downgrade iOS

      • Bitt says:

I read somewhere that until apple still sign it the previous version, I could be downgrade.

Is not clear when apple will stop sign it.

        • Paul says:

Yes correct, you can downgrade as long as Apple is signing prior versions of iOS. But typically this window is short and closes rather quickly, making it an unreliable option for downgrading iOS for most people unless they do it on day 1 or so.

I used Hotspot Shield and was able to download 2 .ipsw in about an hour. It creates a VPN, wondering if I can just do that without the app??

Seems ISP or somewhere between my mac and apple servers, someone is throttling only apple software updates, not a server issue, but, trying to make it look like an apple server issue?

    • Tim says:

That is very curious, it’s possible your ISP is throttling connections to Apple Servers due to many connections at once from other customers trying to update, but that should really not happen. Who is your ISP?

  49. Aryaman says:

To all the people having the problem of wifi not connecting after updating to iOS 8.3 here is the solution: just restart your Wi-fi router…it works for me. Use the same solution if the phone is asking for the password again and again…😊(proudly sent from iOS 8.3😂)

  50. Benjamin D. says:

apparently it will take days, not hours to download.

what is the offing problem? I had this problem with some other version of iOS 8, a week after it came out, it still wanted to take 14 hours instead of 45 mins. to download. I can’t believe it’s apple’s server, something is wrong between my connection and apple, everything else works great, except attempts to get software updates from apple, is my ISP throttling it because they have too many connections?????

    what the ef?

I have been trying for days. I have 2 iOS devices that were on 8.3 beta, I wanted to do iTunes restore, but, I deleted the beta thingy on both devices, so, iTunes claims to have an issue getting the software, and now one of them, I decided to try over the air, and it’s telling me about 2 days remaining with a tiny blue speck on the left.

I’ve tried several times to get these ipsw files, but, they get maybe some megabytes and timeout.

as of this typing, it says 3.0 MB of 1.5 GB downloaded 2 days, 6 hour, 6 mins remaining.

    ????????????

    • gmrol says:

Sounds like your internet connection is very slow, so downloading 1.5GB will take as long as your internet connection depends. Perhaps you are using your broadband for something else, uploading to iCloud Photo library or something similar.

I updated on my 4s and now my Messages is useless…which is the only reason I really use my phone, to text family and friends. Tried rebooting. Tried resetting the network settings. It either won’t load my texts, only loads the last one from someone, or won’t send (has sent an hour or more later). Think it’s time to get a new phone, and I won’t be going with Apple again! Tired of problems with every update!

  52. Theresa says:

Updated both iPhone 6 & iPad Mini. Very quick install on both devices. Emoji keyboard has a slightly different look to it but nothing happens when I long press a button. No skin tone options. 54. Paul Greenwood says:

Gee, stupid me…I tried updating my ios software…..I guess I’ll never learn….here’s my problem if anyone can help; I updated my Ipad2 software to 8.3…..first i backed up my ipad on itunes, then i went back in and updated to 8.3 from itunes….install took about 45 minutes…..after install my ipad restarted and worked fine….before i went to sleep, i plugged in my charger and turned off the ipad. This morning ipad won’t start…..I tried the hard reset mode(2 buttons), the apple logo comes on for about 1 minute then disappears…after 30 seconds or so the logo comes back on. Seems I am stuck in a loop. Bigger problem is my computer doesn’t see the ipad, so i can’t even re-update. Any suggestions?

      • Paul Greenwood says:

Thanks bt, that worked. I had not known about DFU mode, never had that serious a problem before…anyway, worked… after about 16 hours of waiting for programs to load(got hung up a couple of times), Ipad finally booted up….I’m afraid to shut it down now…but at least I know what to do if it happens again….

        • Pablo says:

DFU mode is quite technical but it works when all other possibilities to reinstall iOS has failed. Glad you got things working! It is rare that you will need to do that, fortunately.

    Hi
My wifi home connection won’t work on iPhone 4s since upgrading g to iOS 8.3, it works on my iPad that I didn’t do the update too. I’m tired of apple and will be going to Samsung, this is just frustrating. Can anyone help me regarding how to get wifi working on my 4s in the mean time? I’ve tried rebooting, putting in password and nothing. Thanks

    • Lennard says:

      Hi

I totally agree. Since upgrading my iPhone 4s to iOS 8.x (including iOS 8.3) WLAN is practically useless. Absolutely unacceptable for a brand like Apple.

  57. Courtney says:

I’ve had the update for a day now and every time I send an email it takes a really long time. Also, the Messages app runs very slowly at times, I’ll type and nothing happens for a few seconds, then suddenly all the letters will appear.

Since 8.3 update of my iphone 6 I can not get carrier service. Just says “searching”.

Have done numerous restores, Network resets, Reset all settings.

Spoke to someone at Apple helpdesk & they believe that it is a hardware issue.

Funny how it was working fine before the update.

    Can anyone help me?

  62. Dan says:

Upgraded to iOS 8.3 on iPhone 6 and when i go to photos and go to shared it’s completely empty. None of the albums i’ve shared or people have shared with me are there. Some of the existing albums i had created don’t have all the pictures i have added to them. When i go to settings>icloud>photos> icloud photo library is on and says updated just now. HELP!

    • neo says:

Make sure you are signed into your iCloud account, then you must be on wi-fi. Photo Sharing iCloud can take a long time to download the pictures, depends on internet speed. You can always double-check they are still there with iCloud.com on the website it has the photos app too.

Help, I have an iPhone 4s and it is currently at iOS 6.0
I have tried several times to update my iPhone to iOS 8.3, but it says “Update Failed” every single time. I have plenty of storage, so that’s not the issue. I have tried to update it without it being connected to iTunes, and with. Neither works. Please help.

  65. Caz says:

I’ve updated software I wished I hadn’t as when you go into settings I can’t get passed do not disturb, to get into general to switch off voice over. It’s very frustrating.

  66. Denus says:

Fortunately, it’s working fine on my 6+ 128Gb.
And yes, it takes ages, but I don’t have to hold it while it’s busy… Just let it go till the end.
Good luck for the people with issues: I know how frustrating it can be.

  68. Thomas says:

I had updated to 8.3 and ever since doing so I get an error when i go to my email/emails (CanNot Get Mail) The connection to the server has failed. Ive re-entered the passwords and i still get the error. Is anyone else having this issue ?

    • David says:

Yes — Encountering “Cannot Get Mail” error periodically on iPad Mini Retina and iPhone 6 Plus — both recently upgraded from iOS 8.2 to iOS 8.3. I’m unable to force the error via manual email refresh, though — it just happens, periodically, when the device connects to the offending email server(s).
Both devices interact with 5 separate email accounts, so short of disabling all and then enabling each one, one-at-a-time and waiting, I’m at a loss as to how to determine WHICH email account is producing the “Cannot Get Mail” error. iOS is useless at providing error context.

  69. Luisa says:

I’ve uptdated it and every now and then, my iPhone shuts down abruptly!!! and keyboard is VERY slow. How can I fix this?? 😭

  70. Leandra says:

I had iOS 8.2. Then I updated to iOS 8.3, but when my iPad was done with the update, nothing was different and I didn’t get the new emojis. I checked in settings, and even though it says “software is up to date”, it says that I still have iOS 8.2 and there is no update available. What do I do?

  83. Gale says:

I did the iOS 8.3 update about 3 hours ago and when the Apple logo and bar was finished the screen went completely black so I powered it off and back on. Now all I get is the red iTunes circle in the middle of the screen with an up arrow and what looks like a power cord picture. It is fully charged. It will not swipe anywhere to turn it on.

  84. Julie says:

My daughter completed the update and now the phone says no service and she cannot text, access the internet, etc. Tried shutting it off several times. Also tried a reset and that didn’t work. Still says no service.

  85. Kennedy says:

I updated my iPad last night. Well actually I didn’t. I tried to update my iPad last night but it completely shut down. I can’t turn it on. I’ve plugged it in to see if it died for a couple hours. But nope. The screen is completely black.

  86. Imogen says:

I downloaded the latest apple update last night on my new Iphone 5s, all appeared okay. Woke up this morning to a red apple logo. Tried plugging it into Itunes like it said and now it won’t recognise it!!!! Have tried everything. Holding down the power and middle button, holding the middle button in when plugging it to the laptop.. NOTHING!! HELP!! I want my phone back!!

    • Imogen says:

Have managed to connect it to Itunes and restore it back to factory settings but it’s now saying there is an error!! (-1)

Really hope that Apple will do something about this. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!

      • orx says:

iTunes Error 1 during restore usually means that iTunes can not contact the Apple Server, so you should try again a few more times if it has worked before. Maybe your firewall, router, hosts file, or something similar.

If the new restore does not work, sometimes Error 1 can be overcome with DFU mode restore described here http://bit.ly/1aqL9Id

  87. Brad says:

    Hey,

I updated an 5K iMac and a iPad Air 2. Now both are having issues with recognizing the Bluetooth or USB keyboard.

I had to shut off Bluetooth completely so I could get the on screen keyboard on the iPad Air. Same with the iMac, I am using USB devices only.

Downloaded the new update to my iPad and now it will not start. I press the power button and the Apple logo appears and stays on the screen for a good minute and then the screen go black again. It’s been over an hour and still no progress. Anyone else having this problem? I’m worried the update fried my iPad.

    • Michael says:

Got the same problem here – Ipad-3 update to IOS 8.3 , device seems to be in a deadlock – starts all over again and again and again, showing the white apple on a black background for a while – then a thin progressbar appears after a while and shows progress for something going on … and all of a sudden display is shut off, going to deep black – and after a while the same thing happens again.

      Any idea welcome !

  96. Margaret says:

  98. Sammy says:

I updated to iOS 3.1 and found that my recent photos have now been added to ‘my photos’ but not the ‘all photos’ album thing.. This is a problem when trying to upload to Instagram etc.. As it no longer shows up.. I already hate this update and have had it no longer than 30mins!!!

  99. Jon says:

I’ve updated an iPhone 5S, 6, 6+, iPad 3 & 2 ipadmini 2’s without issue. The install on all took awhile, but I left them alone and they completed without problems. The app launcher seems faster.

  100. Dennis Lew says:

New 8.3 update still does not allow iPhone 6+ to pair with 2015 Ford Navigation system or Lexus system.

    • gm says:

iPhone 6 Plus should work fine through Bluetooth speakers in Ford and Lexus, try to re-sync with Bluetooth again

  101. I have an iPad3. The update took only a few minutes to download and install, and I have had no problems so far.

  106. G says:

I downloaded 8.3 on my iPhone 5, and it kept getting stuck on “verifying update” but then it ended up going to the Apple logo which I thought was a good sign. But when I unlocked my phone, I noticed it still hasn’t updated, so I’ve tried it a couple times since then and the same thing keeps happening (“1” badge icon still remains on settings icon, indicating there’s still an update available)… And now, my phone is searching for service. I have wifi, but “Searching…” is in the toolbar.

    Help?

  107. Joseph Blomley says:

After updating an iPhone 5, I get only a part of a screen that seems to have been designed for an iPad. I can’t push it around on the display and I can’t use 2 fingers to change the size. This means that I can’t even type in my pass code to access the device, because I only get a part of the keypad.

  108. iFoneSix says:

I just updated to iOS 8.3 but my iphone6+ is stuck (on loading screen with dotted circle) see picture:

    http://i.imgur.com/GTGds3f.png

The activity indicator has not moved for over an hour :(

Anyone else seeing this? Good thing I have AppleCare+ as it looks like the update bricked my phone.

    • Paul says:

Yea you shouldn’t see the spinning circle for longer than a few minutes. Force reboot and then restore with iTunes if it doesn’t figure itself out.

If it’s unresponsive with that step, you can force it into Recovery Mode and then do a restore with iTunes and a computer (the backup can be from iTunes or iCloud)

      https://osxdaily.com/2011/01/08/iphone-recovery-mode/

  109. Chris says:

iOS 8.3 has bricked my iPhone, it’s stuck on the apple logo loading bar for an hour now.

Great, thanks Apple. Great update! I guess you knew that I had nothing left to do today, no meeting in an hour, nope. I didn’t need to work today anyway, I needed to spend all day restoring an iPhone and downloading 100 apps again. Thanks again Apple!!! What a great iOS update!

    • Paul says:

Let it sit, it may complete updating on its own, the same thing happened on my iPhone Plus and it took a very long time before finishing. The progress bar did not move.

Otherwise, if multiple hours progress, you may need to restore from a backup.

I’ve seen a handful of people with this issue updating with Software Update.

      • Chris says:

Thanks Paul, I let iPhone sit longer and I came back and it was normal updated to iOS 8.3 like it should have! Never seen an update take this long.

Let this be a warning to others updating to iOS 8.3: if the update install looks frozen or stuck, it’s not, the bar does not move, so just WAIT!

        • Martin says:

my iphone 6 bricked after update… as a dev i had ios8.3beta installed, after updating to the official 8.3 OTA there is only a “blue screen” and a always reboot…

          LOL APPLE

          • Tushar says:

Hi, I am facing similar issue where since yesterday my phone is stuck on blue screen & again shows apple logo. I am totally stuck with this and it doesn’t seem to be going at all. Do I need to get it checked. Is there any way to go back to old version. At least the phone will start working.

        • itasara says:

My last couple updates, maybe one of them was a computer update, took a long time. One update I started when I went to bed and in the morning nothing had happened. But I read that sometimes when a new system is out their system gets overwhelmed. I don’t know if that is true or not. I downloaded this new one from my phone, but I guess I haven’t actually installed it yet. Am reading all these comments first.

      • Precious says:

How about if it was interrupted? Like mine, while I was upgrading my iPhone 4s using iTunes my laptop shut down and all I can see now is the apple logo and the progress bar and I cant shut it down or restore it. What will I do? PLEASE HELP ME! :(

    • dipdaw says:

If I had read this comment earlier I wouldn’t have attempted to download iOS 8.3. Anyway, I downloaded and upgraded without any issue whatsoever!

    • Jefe says:

No gun to your head – how about updating when you go to bed.

    • katy says:

I decided to try and run the update to my phone last night .. set it to go around 10:30 and woke up this morning with it frozen in place saying ‘verifying update’ .. SO annoying, literally can’t use my phone at all. now I have to wait for it to die becasue – as in all iPhones- no top button broke a while back!!! grrrr… so frustrated.

  110. Emoji says:

The new emoji icons are really ugly, any way to change them back?

    • Ed says:

The general design of the emoji actually hasn’t changed, but they now included racial variants. The default is set to some weird “yellow” color ala the Simpsons. Just hold down and select the preferred skin tone, and you should find something close to the original emoji.

      • Ron Gould says:

Updated my iPad and iPhone, went and made a cup of tea and when I came back it was all done. Seamless. I wonder why you’ ® experienced such problems. Take some Soma, lie down for half an hour and grow up.

  111. O Brother Where Art Tho says:

I can’t install iOS 8.3 because I do not have enough storage available on a 64GB iPhone Plus? It’s 64GB! But there is 15GB of “Other” space shows up in iTunes, what is this Other crud Apple? I deleted all Messages, no relief.
