Apple Watch trio of devices

Apple has released the first update to Apple Watch software, versioned as Watch OS 1.0.1. The update is a fairly small download weighing about 51MB, and includes performance improvements and bug fixes for the device, making it recommended for all Apple Watch users to install. Release notes accompanying Watch OS 1.0.1 are included below.

How to Download & Install Watch OS 1.0.1 Update

Downloading and installing the Apple Watch OS 1.0.1 update is performed on the iPhone which the Apple Watch is paired to. The device must have at least a 50% charge for the update to install, and the Watch must be connected to it’s power charger.

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, then go to the “My Watch” tab
  2. Choose “General” and “Software Update”
  3. When the update appears, be sure that Apple Watch is near the iPhone and choose “Download & Install”

You’ll agree to terms of service (after carefully reading it, surely!), the update will download, prepare, then install. While the Watch OS update is installing, the device will be largely unusable with an  Apple logo visible on screen with a status bar of sorts circling around it, before rebooting itself with the freshly installed update.

For those wondering, Apple Watch OS is basically a redesigned and restyled version of iOS, the mobile version of Apple system software. And iOS is basically a stripped down and redesigned version of system software based upon OS X, the Mac system software. Essentially, Apple has a trio of different system software which is all using the same UNIX base, kind of interesting for those who care about the geekier side of things.

The Solar face isn’t working right after the update. Hopefully it gets fixed soon. It would also be nice if there were a few more complications on the solar face.

yawn, another week, another round of updates. Why the #$%^ cant they just do it right the first time?
Im guessing apple has been hiring programmers from the firefox caves where the motto is “break what works today, release a fix tommorow. Call EVERYTHING a “security” issue to justify a new version number each week.
Why cant they find good programmers? Maybe they just are out to insure job security by putting out crap each week so they can fix it next week.
    Im sick of this @#$%

  3. RU Kidding says:

Anyone who buys this crap is a goof. SJ is rolling in his grave!

At the moment, Apple Watch is for early adopters and has a limited appeal. But in time, it will develop, and be pretty interesting. When you have the Apple Watch, you use your iPhone less, no doubt about that, whatever that means.

  4. Wharf Xanadu says:

Noticed my heart rate monitor isn’t updating itself too. Otherwise much faster in general. Only had apple watch for about a week still a lot to learn and understand. Fun.

  5. Greg says:

I updated my Apple Watch to OS 1.0.1 and now my heart rate measuring heartbeat BMP gauge doesn’t update itself. It will go hours without updating, it used to update every few minutes on it’s own, how can I fix that? Anyone have this issue? How did you resolve it? I rebooted, etc, no luck.

That’s like my favorite feature of Apple Watch, any way to downgrade Apple Watch OS to the prior version? I bought this thing for fitness tracking mostly, so to lose heart rate monitoring makes this a $350 toy.

    • Greg says:

I should say that if I do the swipe-up swipe-over to heartbeat, it will measure the heart rate once, but that’s it. I have to manually update my heart rate now, when I want it to update itself.

      • Sean Gonzales says:

Greg I have the same thing. We are not the only one where heart rate monitoring stopped working, it’s active discussion on Apple forums

Typical Apple, each software update brings new bugs rather than fixes anything.

Should have learned from “upgrading” to OS X Yosemite and iOS 7 and iOS 8 – never update if you want things to work! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

  6. bek says:

It looks like they disabled voice-to-text dictation if you have Siri disabled. I’m very bummed about this, as I used the voice feature on the watch a ton but don’t want to use Siri.

  7. Teerachai Poldetaprinya says:

Wow!!! Thai language updates. I’m wait it.

  8. Wanda Watch says:

    Safari does seem snappier.

  9. Roger Roger says:

I updated, Siri seems a little faster, but otherwise I don’t notice anything different.

By the way, I have no idea how to do the little drawings and heartbeats that Apple advertised.

    • Paul says:

The transitions seem smoother and more fluid, but otherwise I don’t see anything significantly different either… yet.
