Jun 9, 2015 - 8 Comments

OS X Yosemite Apple has released a new beta version of OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 for Mac users in the developer program and participating in the public beta. The release is versioned as build 14E33b.

Mac users who are eligible to receive the new Yosemite beta can find the download available now through the Mac App Store Update mechanism.

The focus of OS X 10.10.4 appears to be mostly under-the-hood changes to fix bugs and improve performance. A notable change that is said to arrive with OS X 10.10.4 is the replacement of critical networking component discoveryd with mDNSResponder, the version which existed on the Mac prior to OS X Yosemite. That change will likely help to resolve any lingering networking discovery and connectivity issues for Mac users who, despite the 10.10.1, 10.10.2, and 10.10.3 software updates, have continuously been impacted by network problems since upgrading to OS X Yosemite.

It’s unclear when OS X 10.10.4 will be made available to the public, but typically Apple goes through numerous beta builds before unveiling the final version, suggesting that the final release may arrive sooner than later.

Separately, those registered as Apple developers can also download OS X El Capitan beta 1, the next generation Mac operating system, which will become part of the public beta program in July, and is aimed at a fall release. OS X 10.11 El Capitan is said to focus heavily on performance and stability, but does include a variety of new features and feature enhancements as well.

After installing this release my 60mbs wireless has dropped to 5-15mbs. Still 35-60 on other Air with 10.10.3 and iOS.

I noticed that after this release mDNSResponder seems to be back. Has anyone else noticed that? Prior to this release, my wifi problems seemed to be solved, but now they appear to be back.

Never mind – I had it confused. I know the mDNSResponder is the correct process and the one that fixed the wifi problem. I still see disconnects when streaming video with Safari and Flashplayer seems to climb to around 100% CPU. I am trying Firefox and have not been able to reproduce the problem that I have with Safari.

I have never had a problem with WIFI on my 2013 Macbook Pro 13″ retina. I installed this update and now my WIFI is very so or delayed.

So apple release the beta of the current OS the same day as the beta of the next OS, maybe they would be better getting the current one to work properly before going on to the next.

They are too committed to the annual new OS instead of being committed to making a good working version.

OS X El Capitan is primarily focused on quality and performance, it will be a much better experience that what is offered in OS X Yosemite. OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 will be the best version of the system software, but really once OS X El Capitan is out, it will be far superior to OS X Yosemite, since the focus is quality, whereas the focus on Yosemite was never clear, changing for the sake of change, but it has been a mess for many users. If you buy a Mac with Yosemite, that’s OK, but if you’re on Mavericks I would stay put until El Capitan comes out.

Can attest to that. Even on 10.10.4, Finder performance (on maxed haswell rMBP15″ no less) is abysmal.
