OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 Public Beta

Apple has released the first Public Beta build of OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 for Mac users enrolled in the OS X Public Beta testing program. The first public beta arrives about a week after the first developer beta of 10.11.1 was released, but the builds appear to be the same 15B17c.

Release notes accompanying the OS X 10.11.1 Public Beta 1 offering says the update aims to improve the stability, compatibility, and security of the Mac, presumably including bug fixes and enhancements.

The update weighs in around 1GB and available from the Updates tab in the Mac App Store. As usual with installing a software update, a restart is required.

For now, it appears the primary visible difference brought with the early beta builds of OS X 10.11.1 are the inclusion of a variety of new Emoji characters and icons, including a taco, a burrito, a face that is vomiting dollar signs, an eye-rolling face, a unicorn, the obviously important Star Trek inspired Live Long and Prosper salute, and, what is sure to be popular, a middle finger gesture.

These interesting new Emoji icons can be summoned from the quick Emoji typing panel in OS X, and are also part of iOS 9.1 where they are included in the general Emoji keyboard.

Any Mac user can enroll to participate in the OS X Public Beta program by going to beta.apple.com and signing up. Beta software is generally less stable than final public builds of system software, and therefore is generally not recommended for the average users primary machine.

For those wondering, OS X El Capitan, versioned as OS X 10.11, is set to be released to the general public on September 30 as a free download. The most recent stable build of OS X available to the general public remains OS X Yosemite 10.10.5, though Mac users in the various beta testing programs can also download the OS X El Capitan GM candidate build right now through the Mac Developer Center or via the Public Beta program.

with 10.11 GM i got some problems with mail and the notification. sound is ok, but the number in the dock and the notification is sometimes completely missing.
notification settings are correct – hope this would be fixed with 10.11.1

Reading your comments…it’s a BETA release! You should not test it if you don’t have any experience with beta software what so ever…you make me laugh!

This update completely “broke” my 2011 imac running ElCapitan beta RAID 0 on two SSD’s. I had a heck of a time even cloning back my system after reformatting my drive. I had to clone OS X Yosemite to my SSD’s and then run reinstall OS X from a usb installer for Yosemite. I notice ElCapitan does not appear to support RAID O in disk utility.

widgets disappeared in the middle of the notification, how to restore?

  6. Simone says:

I hope they fixed the location services and the meteo widget that are currently broken from me.

    • I’m on Yosemite 10.10.4 and have been suffering from the location service bug. This sucks. Had a chat with Apple Care for like two hours and virtually tried every solution, in vain. I really hope El Capitan fixes that.

10.11 must be lackluster of 10.11.1 is already underway

    • KB says:

This is how software development works. Once the gold master is ready, they fork the code with an accepted list of bugs. They immediately begin working on fixing those for the first minor release. In this case that is 10.11.1.
