MacOS Mojave 10.14.1

Apple has released MacOS Mojave 10.14.1 for Mac users running the Mojave operating system. The first major update to MacOS Mojave includes a few new additions, along with various bug fixes and resolutions to issues that existed in the first release.

For other Mac users, Apple has released security updates for Macs running MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6 and MacOS Sierra 10.12.6.

Additionally, Apple released iOS 12.1 update for iPhone and iPad, along with watchOS 5.1 for Apple Watch and tvOS 12.1 for Apple TV.

MacOS Mojave 10.14.1 includes support for Group FaceTime chat with up to 32 video chat participants, as well as over 70 new Emoji icons.

How to Update to MacOS Mojave 10.14.1

Recall that updating MacOS system software is now handled through the System Preference panel again, thus to download and install MacOS 10.14.1 you would do the following:

  1. Back up the Mac before installing any system software update
  2. Go to the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
  3. Select “Software Update” and then download and install MacOS 10.14.1 when available

The entire MacOS 10.14.1 package is over 3GB to download for most users.

The Mac will require a reboot to complete installation.

Users can also choose to download the package installer from Apple if desired. Because it’s the first point release for MacOS Mojave, a combo update is not available, but using the package installer is similar to using a Combo Update for updating MacOS system software.

If you’re running macOS High Sierra or MacOS Sierra, you will find Security Update 2018-002 High Sierra or Security Update 2018-005 Sierra available in the Updates section of the Mac App Store. Users can also download those security updates directly here for High Sierra and here for Sierra.

The macOS Mojave 10.14.1 update includes the same security fixes as those addressed to prior macOS releases.

MacOS 10.14.1 Release Notes

Release notes for MacOS 10.14.1 are as follows:

The macOS Mojave 10.14.1 update improves the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac, and is recommended for all users.

This update:

– Adds support for Group FaceTime video and audio calls, which support up to 32 participants simultaneously, are encrypted end-to-end for privacy, and can be initiated from a group Messages conversation, or joined at any time during an active call.

– Adds over 70 new emoji characters, including new characters with red hair, gray hair and curly hair, new emoji for bald people, more emotive smiley faces and additional emoji representing animals, sports and food.

Given that the updates download size is over 3GB in most cases, it’s probable that other adjustments, bug fixes, and changes are included in the MacOS 10.14.1 update that are not specifically mentioned in the release notes.

Separately, Apple has also released iOS 12.1 update for iPhone and iPad, along with software updates to Apple TV with tvOS 12.1 and watchOS 5.1 for Apple Watch.

I downloaded Mojave 10.14.1 and my Mac Pro is working very slowly. How do I undo the upgrade?

  2. Ian Sherman says:

i just tried it this morning—but that earned me a “macOS update could not be fully completed” error, which meant I had to restart my MacBook Air (13″, early ’15) but every time I did, it got stuck on the load screen. I tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, and it helped somewhat – except it still wouldn’t get to the login even after the bar was fully loaded! And I just had it serviced a month or so ago…

Am I doing something wrong here; or is it just Apple’s fault?

    • Tn Jn says:

Try rebooting in Safe Mode, hold SHIFT key on start and see what happens. If that works, then use the Combo Update.

Try downloading and using the MacOS 10.14.1 Combo Update and using that to install macOS 10.14.1, it usually will recover from errors during installs like that.

If you have a backup handy you can always restore and then use the combo Update. If you don’t have backups handy, then you need to buy yourself an external hard drive and start backing up the computer with Time Machine, it makes recovering from system failures and update failures super easy! Backups also should make it so you can restore yourself from that kind of mess up without service from Apple…

This update broke my Amazon Prime Video audio sync.

f* mojave, it broke my microsoft word and all office programs

    • Br.Bill says:

I don’t have nice things to say about Microsoft, but this is probably because you’re running Office 2011. 7 year old programs have a high degree of not working.

If you have Office 2016, installing the latest Office updates will fix your issues. If you haven’t been that person that cared if you had those updates, you’re getting bitten now.

Don’t be mad if you get a flat tire after you’ve been running on under inflated tires for a year.

      • Kit Karamak says:

        Oh. Snap.

I use Office 365, and Word works BETTER now with Mojave. Like, a LOT better.

When I open a file that has, say, 700-800 pages, it used to cook the CPU with autosave every few seconds, and it used to take forever for a million characters to render into memory.

Now, it populates almost instantly, it working on large files doesn’t cause the CPU to get hot anymore, and that makes my battery last MUCH longer.

Mojave is the best thing to have happened to MS Office.

Oh, and I keep my updates up to date every MS Update Tuesday.

  5. Allianne says:

Hi! Does your Microsoft apps like MS Word, Powerpoint, etc. still works perfectly?

    • Edison says:

no it doesn’t, it doesn’t even open up some options

      • Br.Bill says:

Make sure you have the latest Office updates. It should help. Not guaranteed. Should.

        • KitKaramak says:

          Agreed with Bill.

Mojave is the best thing to happen to MS Office.

My battery lasts way longer, large files populate much faster, and auto-save doesn’t cause the CPU run hot anymore.

Just make sure you update every MicroSoft Patch Tuesday that an update is available.

        • KitKaramak says:

          Agreed with Bill.

Mojave a godsend for MS Office.

My battery lasts way longer, large files populate much faster, and auto-save doesn’t cause the CPU run hot anymore.

Just make sure you update every MicroSoft Patch Tuesday that an update is available.

          • Nick says:

NO WAY, you can’t even change the font color and highlight different colors in Word with Mojave. It was a huge mistake.

Hi, installed MacOS Mojave which included update .1, on my MBPr 13 Mid 2014 today. It took about an hour, and everything seems to be working correctly.

  8. diuming says:

How do I download full Mojave 10.14.1 installer App for making usb boot disk?

    • Bobber says:

I got the full installer when I downloaded it to a system that was already running Mojave. On my High Sierra system, I only got a stub.

  9. diuming says:

How do I get full Mojave 10.14.1 installer for making usb boot disk?

  10. Richard says:

Still no provision to set a null password (i.e. No password) for account or screensavers. Before everyone goes crazy I am not mobile and neither is my Mac mini.

    • Daniel says:

While you can’t set a null password, you can auto-login and go straight to your desktop at boot up. Similarly, you can turn off screen lock and not need to enter a password to remove the screen saver. It’s like not having a password set at all.

      • KitKaramak says:

This sucks. I liked having a Null PW. And when you had one set before updating to Mojave, you needed to go into safe mode just to change it, to get into your OS, which also sucked.

Apple, if you’re listening, you should have made a little up-date code so that it would tell you that you MUST have a password to update to Mojave. I mean, sheesh.

Anyhow, you can wake from sleep without a PW, but I certainly can’t figure out how to do a fresh boot without needing it to log in. So, Daniel, if you could help me find THAT option, I have searched all over the system preferences. Meh.

  11. RM says:

I’ll try this later today, after I’ve candied up.
Hoping this fixes the issue with 2FA Exchange accounts in MacMail and iCloud (Exchange accounts completely disappear from the system if iCloud is present).

    Happy Halloween!

  12. Bob Nospam says:

Apple is really leading the market in these emoji things. Yay.

  13. Jo says:

Very grateful to have an update.

HOWEVER!! I can only get desert themed backgrounds now!! I had awesome wave and ocean themed ones and now nothing.

Again grateful as managed to get this installed while I was not at computer, and everything generally works well. But I don’t want a choice between desert scapes and Overpowering colours.

  14. Charles says:

Similarly, I updated my desktop 27″ iMac via App Store when prompted to do so. Simply, but tedious process. So far all I’ve noticed is that all apps run a lot slower. Is this progress?

  15. TonyRS says:

Running Mojave 10.14.0 on 27″ iMac. Latest Mojave update to 10.14.1 does NOT show up as available in the new Software Update feature in system preferences!!!

Why not? that is the question. Any one any clues?

A 3.3 gb update of Emoji. Wow I bet those are great Emoji!
