macOS and iOS beta testing

The fifth beta build of iOS 12.3 and MacOS 10.14.5 has been released to users participating in the Apple system software beta testing programs. Typically a developer beta rolls out first and is soon followed by a public beta build.

Additionally, new beta builds of watchOS 5.2.1 and tvOS 12.3 have been made available.

iOS 12.3 beta 5 is available to download from the Software Update mechanism within the Settings app of an iPhone or iPad enrolled in the beta testing program.

iOS 12.3 beta and the tvOS 12.3 beta has mostly focused on a redesigned TV app which promotes content suggestions for a paid subscription service. Presumably there will be a focus on bug fixes and security enhancements as well, and no major new features are expected.

MacOS Mojave 10.14.5 beta 5 also likely includes various bug fixes and security enhancements, without any major new features expected. MacOS 10.14.5 beta does include a new security layer of Gatekeeper for developers to notarize apps that are not distributed through the Mac App Store.

Apple typically goes through a variety of beta builds before releasing a final version to the general public, thus tracking beta releases can offer a loose guesstimate as to when a final version of system software will be released. It’s possible that iOS 12.3 and MacOS 10.14.5 final will be released sometime towards the end of this month, or perhaps at WWDC 2019 which is scheduled for early June. WWDC 2019 is expected to debut the first public look at iOS 13, MacOS 10.15, tvOS 13, and WatchOS 6, and Apple usually offers developer beta versions of the future system software then too.

The most recent stable system software versions are currently iOS 12.2 for iPhone and iPad, a href=”https://osxdaily.com/2019/03/25/macos-mojave-10-14-4-update-download/”>macOS Mojave 10.14.4 for Mac, tvOS 12.2 for Apple TV, and watchOS 5.2 for Apple Watch.
