Public beta of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13

Apple has released the first public beta of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 for users to download. The public beta can be installed on any iOS 13 compatible iPhone and iPadOS 13 compatible iPad.

Anyone can enroll in the public beta testing program for iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, though beta software is much less stable than final versions and thus it’s really only appropriate for advanced users, and preferably on devices that are not for primary use.

iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 both include many new interesting features, including an all new Dark Mode theme, performance enhancements, a new QuickPath swiping keyboard, improvements to many stock apps like Mail and Photos, the ability to connect to SMB shares in Files app, the ability to access external storage volumes in Files app, new Animoji icons, and much more. Note that iPadOS is simply iOS rebranded for iPad.

How to Download iOS 13 Public Beta & iPadOS 13 Public Beta

Important: beta system software is buggy and prone to experience problems and bugs, and perhaps even data loss. Therefore, the public beta should only be installed by advanced users with a thorough understanding of device management, or at least onto a secondary device that is not necessary in day-to-day functioning.

Always backup your iPhone or iPad before installing any beta software.

After you enroll an eligible iPad or iPhone, you then download the public beta profile which allows access to download and install the iOS 13 public beta (or ipadOS 13 public beta) through the Settings app Software Update section.

iOS 13 public beta download

It is very important to create a backup of your device in iTunes on a computer before updating to the iOS 13 / iPadOS 13 public beta so that you can downgrade iOS 13 beta back to iOS 12 if needed. You can also create a backup with iCloud if desired, but iCloud backups can only be used to restore from after the downgrade has complete, and iCloud backups will be overwritten by iOS 13 / iPadOS 13 if it’s installed on a device.

Failure to create sufficient backups can result in permanent data loss from an iPhone or iPad. That applies to all system software updates, but is doubly important for beta system software releases which are much more prone to experiencing problems than stable final builds.

Separately, users can also download MacOS Catalina public beta on a compatible Mac, along with a public beta of tvOS 13 for Apple TV.

Apple has said that iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 will be released in the fall to the general public.

Paul Horowitz: “Note that iPadOS is simply iOS rebranded for iPad.”

Huh? No offense, but that’s entirely incorrect. Here’s the proof…

    That article’s title:
“Apple unveils iPadOS, adding features specifically to iPad”

iPadOS is most certainly not just a rebrand of iOS.

It most certainly is iOS rebranded as iPadOS. If you weren’t paying attention before now, iOS on iPad has always had unique iPad only features, which are basically just multitasking gestures and keyboard shortcuts. That’s the same as it has ever been.

So actually, iPadOS *is* just iOS rebranded for iPad, it’s a marketing thing. Apple can spin it however they want, and anyone can have whatever opinion they want, call it whatever they want, but that’s the reality, iPadOS = iOS. For now anyway. Now maybe the rebranding will signify a further split between iOS and iPadOS, but then why not call iOS iPhoneOS again too? What is the purpose of iOS if not to run on that lineup?

My opinion is that a company maintaining at least five different operating systems seems a little…. disjointed. How can they keep anything focused at that level of division? The entire point of iOS was to merge everything that wasn’t a Mac under one roof, and separate from the Mac. BTW iOS *was* a branch of Mac OS X originally, too!

I don’t know, lots of confusion abounds, naming, renaming, merging, splitting, what makes sense does not make sense to me. Then again, Jony Ive just quit Apple, or got fired, and now design reports to the Operations department. So the whole thing is weird.

Also note that, though not mentioned above, Apple also released today the 5th beta of iOS 12.4. iOS 12.4 is, presumably, the update that will include the new Apple Card.

The first public beta build of iOS 13 / iPadOS 13 is apparently 17A5508m which would put it the same as developer beta 2. If that’s the case, caveat emptor, because this is a VERY buggy beta experience.

Personally I would not install this onto an iPhone. If you have a spare iPad laying around that you don’t use for critical stuff and don’t mind it crashing and rebooting periodically and things like Notes and Photos randomly not working, it’s perhaps a worthwhile thing to try out on that.
