iPhone 4S Case Solidifies Name, Shows Volume Buttons Moved to Right Side

iPhone 4S Otterbox case

At least one of the devices to be launched by Apple on October 4th looks to be named ‘iPhone 4S’ after all. The proof comes in the form of several pictures of an Otterbox case, clearly showing the iPhone 4S monicker printed on the packaging, which were discovered and posted to Twitter by jailbreaker @chronic.

Perhaps more interesting is that the volume buttons appear to have switched places to the right side of the iPhone, matching the iPad, which is seen clearly in this picture:

Moving the volume button to the right side is compelling because:

  • It gives credence to several iPhone 5 cases which show the volume buttons on the right side
  • This breaks from the long established norm of existing iPhone and iPod touches

Chronic suggested the move is simply related to the volume button shutter features in iOS 5, but it’s also likely that Apple intends s to make all iOS devices consistent with their button locations.

How about this: The people at Otterbox don’t know what they’re talking about.

As an advertising professional, I’ve seen pre-market things that wind up changing their names. I’ve also seen examples (as a regular consumer) of accessories for devices that are ON the market that don’t have the actual names listed correctly on the package.

Take this with a grain (or 4 or 5) of salt people.

It’s pretty much impossible for Apple to only release a 4S model now. A combination of Jobs leaving and no 5 could crash the share price. They’ve been extremely lucky, given all the bad economic news around us. No 5 could end that luck.

MacRumors says the side buttons are there just for display purposes and not on the actual plastic.

Most importantly, it’s not an iPhone5, meaning I DON’T CARE.

  4. Patrick says:

Very odd there is no mention of this case anywhere else, including Otterbox.com. Just saying.

I will wait to hear it from Tim in October!

    :(

I just want an iPhone with a bigger screen, it’s been 3.5″ since 2007

Prepare for disappointment, iPhone 4S is the only phone coming out on October 4th!

I think I will short AAPL on the initial media backlash, and then wait until June 2012 for the real iPhone 5 or just upgrade to Android for the time being.
