Official YouTube App for iPhone & iPod Touch Released, Grab It Before iOS 6

Official YouTube app for iOS

Google has released a dedicated official YouTube app for the iPhone and iPod touch, just in time for the soon to be released iOS 6. If you’re thinking to yourself “but my iPhone already has YouTube” then you’d be right, but the iOS 6 update removes the long-bundled YouTube app that came from Apple. That means if you want a dedicated YouTube app you’ll have to download the official Google offering from the App Store, and that’s actually a good thing because the new app is better than the version that has been on iOS for ages.

The YouTube app has all the standard YouTube features we all enjoy, including subscriptions, subtitles, comments, social sharing features, much better search options, and even a better icon.

Really the only potential downside to the official YouTube app is the inclusion of pre-roll ads that didn’t exist in the Apple-provided version, but for publishers and video creators that is probably a welcome change.

The current version supports iPhone and iPod touch, and apparently an iPad version will be out soon too. If you watch YouTube videos on your iOS device, grab this official version now before updating to iOS 6 and you won’t miss any YouTube action, and you won’t be surprised when the ancient version disappears from your device.

Not a universal app either, iPhone/iPod Touch only. Guess we’re supposed to continue using Safari and YouTube.com on iPad.

Read the article.. In the last paragraph it says “The current version supports iPhone and iPod touch, and apparently an iPad version will be out soon too.”

You could still get ads in the built in Youtube app, I got one earlier today. Granted it was the first one I had so thats why I remember it but they are there. But I do like the new one better so its a small price to pay!

I like the new YouTube app a lot more. Also, YouTube links already open from Safari into the YouTube app after you install it, this feels like Apple has been planning this a long time.

so when iOS 6 comes out, we wont be able to download google’s YouTube app?

    • Paul says:

The official YouTube app from Google will always be available. The currently installed YouTube app from Apple will be removed. All that means is if you don’t download the Google version when you update to iOS 6 you won’t have a YouTube app.
