League of Legends for Mac

The wildly popular multiplayer game League of Legends is now available for the Mac at the great price of free. Originally based on the Warcraft 3 map Defense of the Ancients, League Of Legends allows a player to control a single hero while battling in teams of up to 5 players each against an opposing team. Each hero has their own unique attributes and attacks, and there’s a ton of different hero characters (“champions”) to choose from, providing for a very large variety of gameplay styles.

Technically in open beta, the free to play game plays quite well in Mac OS X on most new Macs, though since it is a beta there will be some quirks here and there.

Grab the game client first, it’s small but then distributes in a similar way to Starcraft and Blizzard titles, where you download the initial DMG and application which then retrieves the complete app from the League of Legends servers. The complete download takes a while and is fairly large (3GB or so), so you’ll have plenty of time to register the free account while waiting for it to download.

There’s a minor learning curve, but it’s really not too hard to pick up on. Follow a few tutorials like the one below, or use the in game tutorial and you’ll be on your way and having fun in no time.

If you do find yourself attached to a particular unit or champion, you can pay to unlock them for full time use, otherwise you’ll end up rotating between different characters and classes. And yes, that is how the game makes it’s money.

If you’ve been looking for a new great game to play in OS X, this very well could be it. Check it out, it’s hard to believe a game this fun is free.

Anyone else having trouble logging in?

Im entering my username / password and keep getting the same message “Invalid Combination”
I know the username is correct as i have the email showing it.

    Any ideas?

Actually, comment on this: you don’t have to pay any real money to play; you can unlock champions permanently by collecting ip, which you gain from just playing the game. Paying real money just speeds things up a little

I have never been able to get the big PLAY button to work. Had to trash this useless mess.

when i try to open it nothing happens, has this happen to anybody else?

    • Albert says:

I think i found the problem it says that the file system is case sensitive and that it has to be a non-case sensitive file system to be able to play, does anybody know how to fix this?

  5. Ronjon says:

Any word on system requirements? How does it play on a MacBook Air? Is it choppy?

    • Paul says:

Plays great on a 2012 MacBook Air, full resolution at around 55 FPS. Will try to find more specific information, but I don’t think the requirements are too strict.
