iOS 11.0.2 update is available to download

Apple has released iOS 11.0.2 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running iOS 11. This is the second small bug fix update for iOS 11 that aims to patch various bugs and offer improvements to the operating system, making it recommended for users who are running a prior version of the iOS 11 release.

Users can download iOS 11.0.2 for compatible iPhone and iPad hardware through either the Settings app on their devices, via iTunes on a computer, or they can install the update manually by downloading and using IPSW firmware files for iOS 11.0.2 linked below.

Release notes accompanying the iOS 11.0.2 download say the update will fix an issue where crackling sounds occur during some phone calls on iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus devices. Additionally, a bug where some photos appeared hidden is addressed. Finally, the update fixes and issue where attachments on certain encrypted emails could not be opened.

How to Download & Update to iOS 11.0.2

Always back up your device before installing any software update, even small point releases like this. The simplest way to update to iOS 11.0.2 is through the Settings app OTA mechanism:

  1. Back up the iPhone or iPad if you have not yet done so recently
  2. Open the “Settings” app in iOS and go to “General” and choose “Software Update”
  3. iOS settings icon

  4. Select “iOS 11.0.2” and choose “Download & Install” when it is available
  5. download and install iOS 11.0.2 update

The OTA update is about 275 MB in size.

If you do not find iOS 11.0.2 available on your iPhone or iPad, be sure you have unenrolled from the beta program by removing the beta profile from the iOS device, and then try quitting and relaunching the Settings app. You may need to restart the iOS device to make the non-beta versions appear after removing the iOS beta profile.

Users can also connect their device to a computer with iTunes and install the update when it becomes visible within the iTunes Summary tab.

iOS 11.0.2 IPSW Direct Download Links

Advanced users who prefer to update iOS 11.0.2 via IPSW firmware can do so with the links below. Choose the IPSW that is compatible with your particular device, then you can use the standard directions to use the IPSW to update iOS on the iPhone or iPad with the firmware file and iTunes.

For most users there is little reason to bother with manual firmware updates, and using the Settings app or standard iTunes method is perfectly acceptable.

My husband has just tried to update his iPad Air 2 to ios11 and during update everything has frozen! His ipad air 2 is unworkable with a black screen saying it is updating showing the white apple and part white line. He made sure he was connected to wifi and he had full battery, cleared and closed all apps so none were working. He has tried 3 times to reboot but no change. Please advise, thank you.

Yes when the iPad says it is “updating” and it has the white progress bar with an Apple logo that means it is in the middle of a software update. It must complete the update before it is usable again.

A new problem I’m noticing in all versions of iOS 11: the cellular data amount keeps fluctuating up AND down. So for instance yesterday it was 808 Mb and today it’s down to 607 Mb. And while I’ve updated to 11.0.2 last night (which should theoretically either reset the data usage to 0 or keep it at the last used data amount) I did not have cellular data turned on (so everything has been going over wifi). I’ve noticed this up/down fluctuation several times now, and I did not reset statistics which would move it back to 0. Anyone else experiencing this? I use this feature a lot so I can gauge my data usage and prevent overages, but it’s acting bizarre now.

One other thing (not an issue but an observation) in cellular data: there is a new item called “Hashtag Images.” Not sure what this is for (maybe internal social media stuff which I don’t have turned on), but it has the same placeholder icon like the new “Springboard” option also in cellular data.

My pet hate for Apple updates to IOS are the size is never available.
FYI the iPhone 7 is just under 2.4Gb for others that this frustrates too.
No issues on last update, will wait already consumed over 5Gb in too short a time. Sure another will be released in days.

Tony, get a Samsung phone and you will never again have to complain about the size of updates. I’ll bet youy are a blast to party with also. Do you complain about the size of beer cans taking up too much space in the garbage can??

I have an iPhone 8 plus with iOS 11.0.2. This definitely does not fix the crackling problem. Actually never noticed it on 11.0.0 or 11.0.1. Horrible now.

My 7 has never exhibited static calls. Might be a carrier issue. AT&T and used ut all over the country including a cross country drive with hours of calls

Battery life has been the worst with iOS 11. Control Center doesn’t work several times and now the disable/enable Wifi is not the same as turn off/on????
We need Steve Jobs back to stop this madness under Tim’s lack of true innovation.

Does this fix crackling and terrible call quality on iPhone 7 too? That has been a long problem. I get crackling call audio periodically on my iPhone 7 Plus. In fact the iPhone 7 is the worst phone I’ve ever had for making actual phone calls, my ancient Nokias from a decade and a half ago were far superior with actual phone calls. The call quality on iPhone 7 Plus is just terrible, it is muffled, cuts out, crackling, it’s like they didn’t test it for actual phone use. It’s so bad that my friends and family that also have iPhone 7 openly joke about how we can’t communicate with one another using our phone as a phone, because the phone itself doesn’t work or the reception and call audio is so bad it’s almost impossible to hear the other person accurately. If two iPhone 7 are trying to talk to each other, good luck, it’s a comedy for cut-outs and missed phrases.

Aside from the horrible call ability and not having a headphone jack which is the most annoying and inconvenient thing for a phone to require dongles to connect to audio, I like the iPhone 7 Plus enough and see no reason to get an 8 which is really barely a 7s. Just my 2cents.

I, too, have suffered with static and dropped half-sentences when making audio or FaceTime calls on my 7+. I sure hope this update fixes it.

    • slimbizket says:

Horrible audio on iphone 7 and the has the same cracking and muffled sound JJ talks about.

    • CMC says:

What carrier are you using? I had my 6sPlus on T-Mobile for quite some time and it was stellar with sound quality. Superb actually. It’s an unlocked phone. I switched to Verizon and the sound quality of calls has dropped rather significantly. This is definitely a carrier issue. I’ve also used my phone with AT&T and had great sound quality there as well. Positively on Verizon the sound quality is far inferior than GSM providers.
