WWDC 2019 set on June 3 and iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 are expected

Apple has announced that their annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) will take place starting on June 3 and extend through June 7. The developer conference is to be held in San Jose, California, and tickets for attending developers will cost $1599.

While WWDC is aimed almost entirely at developers, it also traditionally offers the first look at upcoming operating systems and software efforts from Apple. Thus it’s widely expected that the next major versions of system software for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV are set to be announced and debuted on June 3. Assuming Apple follows the same versioning system as prior years, this suggests that June 3 will see the first public unveiling of iOS 13, MacOS 10.15, WatchOS 6, and tvOS 13.

Rumors and speculation tend to swirl around WWDC, both about possible new features in the various Apple operating systems, but also sometimes about new hardware releases. Apple has used the WWDC keynote to launch new hardware in the past, and hardware releases are always a wildcard possibility for future WWDC events.

iOS 13 is widely rumored to feature an optional dark mode interface feature (similar to Dark Mode on Mac), a revised Home Screen experience for iPad and possibly iPhone, and surely many additional smaller features, improvements, adjustments, and refinements to the mobile operating system used by iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Judging by the WWDC 2019 homepage, which features a rotating image of Animoji characters with symbols flying out of the top of their heads, it’s also possible that additional Animoji characters or features will be included in iOS 13.

On the MacOS side of things, it’s expected that MacOS 10.15 will continue to march forward with Marzipan, which essentially lets the Mac run iPad and iOS apps. Theoretically this will make cross-platform app development and app use simpler and more compatible between the iOS and MacOS platforms. MacOS Mojave already has several Marzipan apps borrowed from the iOS world, including the Stocks, Voice Memos, and News apps. Other features, refinements, and improvements will come to the next release MacOS as well.

While Apple usually debuts their new operating systems at WWDC, soon followed by developer beta builds and then public beta testing builds, the final versions of system software typically do not arrive for the general public until fall of the same year. Accordingly, it’s reasonable to expect that a release date for iOS 13 and MacOS 10.15 will be sometime in the fall of 2019, along with tvOS 13 and watchOS 6.

Hardware wise, it’s possible that WWDC 2019 may see the first unveiling of a new Mac Pro, which was first discussed by Apple in 2017, and there are also various rumors about a possible new larger screen 16″ MacBook Pro. Other Mac products like the iMac line, MacBook, and the MacBook Pro are also due for hardware updates, but it’s unclear if and when those will surface.

Anyone interested in learning more about this years developer conference can visit the official WWDC 2019 page on Apple.com here.
