Beta 1 of MacOS Big Sur 11.1 Released for Testing

macOS Big Sur beta

Apple has released the first beta version of macOS Big Sur 11.1 for Mac users who are participating in the beta testing programs for MacOS system software. Usually a developer beta build arrives first and is soon followed by the same build as a public beta.

Separately, Apple also released iOS 14.3 beta 2 and iPadOS 14.3 beta 2 for iPhone and iPad beta testers.

Presumably macOS Big Sur 11.1 beta 1 focuses on bug fixes and refinements to the Mac operating system, and is unlikely to contain any major new features or changes to the freshly released macOS release.

How to Download MacOS Big Sur 11.1 Beta 1

Backup the Mac with Time Machine or your method of choice before installing any beta system software update.

  1. From the  Apple menu, select “System Preferences”
  2. Choose “Software Update”
  3. Select to update macOS Big Sur 11.1 beta 1

(Yes the update is curiously labeled as macOS Big Sur 11.1 Beta 11.1, but it’s the first beta available for 11.1, thus we’re calling it beta 1)

Completing the beta software update will restart the Mac.

While most Mac users interested in macOS 11 should simply download and install macOS Big Sur on their computers, avoiding the beta entirely, those who are interested in beta testing point release software can install the developer beta or public beta onto their Macs.

If you were previously running macOS Big Sur beta and never unenrolled from the beta testing program, the new beta update will arrive by default onto the Mac anyway. You can still opt-out of receiving beta updates if you’d rather not get the macOS 11.1 beta 1 update.

Aside from an updated UI/UX, has anyone found a positive benefit in big sur over mojave or catalina?

Unable to install MacOS Big Sur 11.1 Beta 1. At the end of the installation process, the update process attempts to reboot the Mac, but the screen stays black. After switching the Mac off and on, it seems to finish the update, but in the System Preferences, I still get the message “An update is available for your Mac”.

Any chance the made a functional weather widget with this update? You can no longer get a 5-day forecast in any view, and unless you use the S,M,L views at the same time, you can’t get the current temp, Forecasted H and L temps and the precipitation forecast in one view. (Like you always used to)
