How to Disable Sponsored Wallpaper Image Ads in Brave Browser

Oct 29, 2022 - 1 Comment

Brave browser

The Brave web browser may be aimed at increasing privacy and reducing ad exposure, but that doesn’t mean it’s a perfect web browser, and one of the more obnoxious aspects of the Brave browser is that it defaults to showing advertising as wallpapers in new windows and tabs.

Brave refers to the ad wallpapers as “Sponsored Images” but you can turn these off if you don’t like to see them.

Disabling Sponsored Wallpaper Images in Brave

Here’s all it takes to hide the wallpaper ads:

  1. Open a new tab or window in the Brave browser app
  2. Click on the “Customize” button near the bottom
  3. Find “Background Images” and toggle the switch for “Show Sponsored Images”

With this turned off, you’ll just see the standard wallpapers and no more of the weird sponsored ad image wallpapers.

Brave has a lot of handy features that are native to the browser, like built-in TOR private browsing and default ad blockers. Some of these privacy centric features can interfere with web functionality though, so it’s often best to use another web browser that doesn’t have those capabilities as well for things like banking, or visiting sites you want to support (like osxdaily.com, obviously).

Enjoy Brave! Or use another web browser, whatever works for you.

I used to think Brave had some good ideals at first. But now they just are replacing one annoyance with another of their own making. I guess if I was all in on privacy, I would probably use Firefox over Brave at this point. Overall, though, Safari is by far the best balance of privacy, performance, and minimal design. I would use it on my Windows machines if it was available.
