How to Update HomePod for Mac with Home app

HomePod Mini and HomePod are setup to automatically install available software updates for the devices, but if you’re the type of person who likes to expedite system updates when they become available, or if you disabled auto-updates, you may be interested in manually updating the system software on your HomePod Mini.

It’s easy to update the software on HomePod right from the Home app of a Mac.

We’re going to assume that your HomePod Mini or HomePod is setup to use already with Home app and you can access it from your Mac that way.

How to Install Software Updates on HomePod from Mac with Home App

Here’s how you can manually update the HomePod Mini or HomePod from Home app:

  1. Open the Home app on Mac
  2. Find the HomePod Mini or HomePod that you want to update and double-click on it within the Home app
  3. Scroll down in the Settings list to find the Updates section, and click on Update if one is available
  4. How to update HomePod manually on a Mac with Home app

Installing updates to the HomePod Mini is not the speediest thing in the world, so be prepared for it to take a little bit of time even if the update is fairly small.

You may notice when you launch the Home app that you get an “Update Available” message, which typically will trigger the automatic update process as well.

This is obviously updating the HomePod software by using a Mac with Home app, but you can also update HomePod from an iPhone or iPad using a similar approach.

Finally, if the HomePod is not working as expected, or not working at all, you can restore HomePod Mini with a Mac or PC by using Finder or iTunes, similar to how you restore any iOS or iPadOS device.
