Use Wingdings and Emoji to Customize iOS Folder Labels
Bored with how your iPhone and iPad folders are looking? Well you can really stylize things by using wingdings and emoji icons to customize iOS folder labels. This gives each folder a much more interesting appearance, complete with little icons alongside the name.
The first thing you’ll want to do is be sure you have enabled the iOS Emoji keyboard on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and then the rest is easy.
How to Use Emoji & Wingdings in Folder Names on iPad and iPhone
This works in all versions of iOS that support Emoji and Folders:
- Tap and hold on a folder name to initiate the renaming process on iOS
- Access the Emoji character(s) you want to use in the folder name from the Emoji keyboard – or to use WingDings, copy the wingding into your clipboard so that you can paste it into the folder name
- Set the folder name as usual by hitting the Home button, complete with the new emoji character styling
You can do the copy and paste trick for either a wingding or emoji icon as either the sole folder label, or as part of the folder name, just be sure to enter it when you’re actually naming the folder.
In the above screenshot, wingdings are used in the folder labels, and below you can see a folder name with a camera emoji icon shown:
You will obviously need folder support to be able to do this, so be sure to have iOS 4 or later installed on your device if you haven’t already, though any new device comes with iOS 7 or iOS 8 so you should be fine already unless it’s a very old iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch you’re working with.
Outside of Emoji, you can use WingDings too. Here’s a handful of wingdings characters to get started:

Just copy and paste one of these into the Folder names of iOS if you want to include a wingding to stylize it.
This is an awesome tip that was sent in by Matt, so thanks for sending in the tip and screenshots!
While this is cool and all. How do I make it be the keyboard? Like you can go to Settings>General>Keyboard>Add New Keyboard. There are several languages for different keyboards. Is there a wingdings for that? So, I don’t have to constantly open and close and open my app to copy and paste multiple symbols? There must be something…thanks!
Hi
[…] of communication, you can so some fun tricks with Emoji, like adding the icons to iOS folder names (or on the Mac too) to customize the appearance of the homescreen. […]
No need to jailbreak. You can download the Emoji Free app from the App Store, then reboot your phone and launch the app. It will add the Emoji keyboard to your International Keyboard settings.
App is a con. Already on iOS. Do this: Settings, General, International, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard, Emoji. No App Needed*
*iOS 5 needed
If you don’t have iOS 5 here are some emoji:

Rendering of the site causes some emoji to not display correctly but when pasted into iOS it is in color. On computers except OSX Lion they will not display at all.
You can also add the emoji keyboard in Settings/General/Keyboard/International Keyboards/ hit add new keyboard, then select Emoji, you’ll now have a world icon to the left of the keyboard, hit it once or twice and you’ll see the emoji icons. You can use them in folder names, text messages or anywhere you use the keyboard for input. Have fun.
I don’t have Emoji has an option under International Keyboards, do you have to jailbreak or download the keyboard set?
No. Upgrade to iOS 5 and read my post about the app being a scam.
This is very cool and should be a lot more popular!
Awsome….Thanks for the tip!
Really awesome tip! I just figured, that you can also add the famous to your folder names (shift alt + ).
