Bought a New Mac Recently? Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is a Free Download If So
Did you buy a new Mac between June 6, 2011 and July 20, 2011? If so, don’t grab Lion from the App Store quite yet because you qualify for a free download of Mac OS X Lion, directly from Apple. All you need to do is visit Apple’s Up-To-Date page to claim your copy, just be sure you have your Macs Serial Number, date of purchase, and place & location of purchase ready.
Head over to Apple’s Up To Date page to claim your free copy
Any Macs bought July 20 won’t need to do this because they’ll come with Lion preinstalled. If you bought a Mac before June 6, well, you’ll just have to buy Lion from the App Store like the rest of us, it’s $29.99 and includes a very generous personal license that will allow you to install Lion on all of your personal machines.

u don’t have to download just press command + r at start up and recovery disk will open
hi
I downloaded Os Lion 10.7 from torrent and was wondering if i reinstall it to my mac will it be genuine? and can we enjoy the free update from apple ??? I have a new macbook pro previously installed lion os .just want a clean install again.
Keep in Mind that if you buy a Mac from somewhere other than directly from Apple, you will probably have to upgrade yourself…even aver July 20th. My son bought a Mac today (August 1, 2011) from Best Buy and is right now trying to figure out how to get Lion. Seems to be a lot of hoops to jump through.
Hey Badfish2,
Could you please tell me if your son managed to get lion. The thing is I have the same problem since I bought my MBP on the 18th form bestbuy. and I couldn’t manage myself and get a lion for free. So if yes, please try to inform me with the method to do so.
Regards,
The US website allows you to input information regarding the free update to OS Lion, however, the Singapore Apple website does not even give you this option. Maybe the website is purposely not updated as of yet.
If you read the licence agreement it stipulates only available to the states, Canada and a couple of others????
Can you also use the free Lion license on multiple Macs?
Say I bought my MBP after June 6th and was so excited about Lion, I bought it first thing in the morning in the App Store without checking the up to date site first; Is there any way I could get my $30 back?
So if I bought a macbook pro today online it would ship with Lion pre-installed?
Currently shipping models include the aforementioned Up-To-Date program to access the Lion upgrade as a download, but I would expect that will change shortly as models will begin shipping with Lion pre-installed. The 2011 MacBook Air and Mac Mini ship with Lion preinstalled, for example.
Does this mean that if I buy today a new MBA then after I bought the new mac, I can upgrade my old mac mini for free?
Most likely not, you’d still need to buy Lion for that Mac Mini. Thankfully it’s only $29!
if you buy the MBA in store then you’ll still need to buy Lion for the Mac Mini from the App Store. Preinstalled OS’s from Apple aren’t multi-use, but the ones obtained from the App store are.
Is this available for countries outside US?
Planning to get one real soon, and looks like this link is a must. Thanks for sharing.
