Beautiful Dorena – Paint Fun from the Maker of Kid Pix

Dec 4, 2006 - Leave a Comment

Virtually every kid in the late 1980’s and early 90’s has fond memories of horsing around on a Mac LC in some schools computer lab with Kid Pix, the super friendly and incredibly entertaining paint program for children. The inventor of Kid Pix, Craig Hickman, is now developing a similar program called Beautiful Dorena. Beautiful Dorena is self proclaimed ‘half baked unfinished software’, but that doesn’t stop it from being a total riot.

The interface of Beautiful Dorena is a bit like older versions of Kid Pix, where you click to explore and learn what each function does. The app has a soundtrack of sorts to it, and each paint brush, stamp, and function adds various sound effects and tempos to the mix. It’s pretty chaotic and you won’t exactly be creating the next Mona Lisa, but it is entertaining in the same silly way that Kid Pix was. Since Beautiful Dorena is clearly in beta, expect some features to not work as smoothly as you’d like, or quite as expected. My advice is to download it and try it out for yourself. This quirky software brings out the kid in everyone, even if it is ‘half-baked’ and calamitous.

Check out the screenshots below and try it out! The public beta is free.
