How to Pause App Downloads & Updates on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Mar 5, 2010 - 4 Comments

Did you know you can pause any application download or update on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch? This is great when you’re in a bandwidth bind or have low bars of reception and want to pause an app download so that you can resume it again later.

Here’s how app update and download pausing works in iOS:

  1. When an active download or app update is occurring, locate the app that is being modified
  2. Pause the download/update by just tapping on the app icon while the download is going
  3. You’ll know the download is paused because the name will change to ‘Paused’ (see screenshot)
  4. Tap the icon again to resume the download or update
  5. pause iphone app download

You learn something new everyday! This works on all iOS devices and all versions, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, no matter they all work the same. And, similarly, in OS X you can pause downloads on the Mac App Store too if you want.

This screenshot and tip comes to us from MacObserver and was passed along by a reader, cheers to them for the nifty trick! Works the same in all versions of iOS too.

Neat. I never knew about this, but this could be useful when I have nearly 10 apps to update at once.
