You can have your iPhone display the character count of text messages by enabling an option within the settings, here’s how to do this in iOS:

  • Tap on Settings to launch into the app
  • Locate and tap on Messages
  • Tap the slider next to ‘Character Count’ to the ON position

This is the same on all versions of iOS for iPhone, though it can look a little different.

This is useful if you like to send SMS notifications to Twitter, or you’re just concerned about the general length of your texts.

While you’re in the message settings, you’ll notice the option to turn on iPhone Group Messaging, which effectively lets you text up to 100 people for the price of one SMS. It’s a fun feature but as of now it looks to be limited to AT&T.
