MacOS Catalina beta

Apple has released the fourth beta version of MacOS Catalina 10.15 to users enrolled in the developer beta testing program for the next major MacOS system software release.

Typically a developer beta build is released first and soon followed by a public beta version of the same build number labeled a version behind, for example macOS 10.15 dev beta 4 would be macOS 10.15 public beta 3. The corresponding public beta release is also available.

Mac users currently running the developer beta of MacOS Catalina can find beta 4 available to download now from the Software Update system preferences panel.

MacOS Catalina is set to include a wide variety of new features, including an ability to use an iPad as a second display with a Mac, notable updates to bundled apps like Photos, Notes, and Reminders, the splitting of iTunes into three separate apps for Music, TV, and Podcasts, a new screen saver, tightened security, and much more.

Any Mac user can choose to beta test the upcoming system software by enrolling in and installing MacOS Catalina public beta, but this is only appropriate for advanced users who have thorough backups of their Mac and who are comfortable beta testing system software, which is notoriously buggy and prone to problems. Technically anyone can sign up to participate in the Apple Developer beta program as well, though doing so requires an annual membership fee.

Apple has said that the final version of MacOS Catalina will be available to the general public this fall, along with the final versions of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13. If you can’t wait until then, adventurous users who are sufficiently knowledgable to understand the risks of running beta software can install MacOS Catalina public beta, install iPadOS 13 public beta, and install iOS 13 public beta on iPhone.
