Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 4 now available to download from Apple

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview 4 has been released for developers to download from Apple’s servers. The new build number is 11A480b and includes a variety of changes that were shown at WWDC 2011, and was announced alongside iOS 5 beta 1 and iCloud.

Developers can download the update directly from Apple through the Mac Dev Center. If you’re currently running Lion DP3 you can also download it directly through Software Update, although this does not seem to be available to all users yet.

Not a developer? You can get a nice preview of the latest build in first portion of the WWDC 2011 video, otherwise you’ll have to wait until July for the official release date.

if you got any errors while installing:
    1. open your preview 4 image,

    3. browse to contend/sharedSupport/
    4. open Install ESD
    5. run install file.
    worked fine for me

My Mac gets hotter than usual . 75-80 degrees with Fans on HIGH 6000 rpm.

how do you even boot in you computer in recovery mode…can someone please help.

Would you guys recommend installing this just to try out Lion, or is this just for developers (buggy, laggy etc.)? Can I upgrade to the full version like normal (from 10.6 to 10.7) when it’s out?

  4. Stephan says:

Apple released a minor update to DP4 which fixes the MBP 2011 issues. Great !

    • Tom Davey says:

How do you get this update, Dev website? I can’t see anything…and I can’t get it through Software Update as I can’t even boot into 2011!

      • Will says:

Yes, you can get it from the Developer website and the Mac App Store if you’re a registered developer. As far as I know it still has not appeared through Software Update for most users, but that may change now that WWDC is over.

If you get stuck on boot screen after restart/shutdown after you have installed and used OS X Lion for a while, where it just hangs.

Hold CMD ALT P R until you hear the start up chime twice then release. Should clear the hang and launch.

There is also an extension called ‘don’t steal OS X’, coincidence or not, I deleted this (Confirming delete with password) then the hanging at reboot commenced.

    • AJ says:

I haven’t had any problems on boot but I know users with 2011 MacBook Pro’s have and it is widely talked about on developer forums.

Regarding the “com.apple.Dont_Steal_Mac_OS_X” kernel extension, it has been around a long time and is not unique to Lion:

      • DB1408 says:

Thanks. Issues that have randomly happened are with the ‘Airport’ hanging, not allowing access, which is random and has no identifiable cause, uTorrent failing to respond at times, unresolvable unless OS X is restarted (even with force quit) and mail can sometimes prevent shutdown/restart.

Other than the little nags, it’s far more stable than the first beta.

It seems that some 2011 macbooks work and some do not. I’ve tried every feasible option on my 2011 17″ i7 and its just not getting into the installer.

Its interesting–I cannot boot into a clean install of DP3 either, however I can get into DP2 clean install. Once in DP2 I upgrade to DP3 just fine via software update. So, I am no in DP3. However DP4 is NOT available on Software update, so the only way is to clean install, which, as I mentioned, doesn’t work on my mac. I believe that the problems effecting the DP3 install are not resolved in the DP4 installer either. The only way past for me would be if Apple released DP4 over software update. Everyone else who has got DP4 running on a 2011–consider yourself lucky!

  10. NiiLoC says:

after wrestling with upgrading from dp3 to dp4 on my MBAir for over a day, i finally got dp4 up and running on my 13 inch 2011 MBPro with no issues…

installed it on an internal HD partition (optibay) from a 10.6.7 environment with no problems whatsoever.

didn’t have to mess with .kexts or anything.

@ashpreet: you are booting into the lion recovery mode, you should select re-install lion, if you wish to install…if you have already installed then change your boot drive.

  11. Ashpreet says:

After i installed Lion DP 4. the computer restarted and i get the Mac Utitiles screen with 4 options
    1. Restore from time machine
    2. Get help online using Safari
    3. Use Disk Utility
    4. Re-install Lion

I dont know what to do. Please help… urgent.

    • M says:

That’s not normal, something may have went wrong in the installation process which is why it’s always good to have a backup. You could try Disk Utility to check the disk, and if that fails, reinstall Lion.

Works on my mbp 2011 13″ with no issues. Installed from DP3 environment on a new partition. No problems at all…

  15. Atari says:

Don’t bother installing on a MacBook Pro 2011. It will just freeze on first boot.
    No solution for now.

Strange Apple cannot get it to work on the latest MBP 2011. :-/

Checking the other posts might help:

“I had the same problem on a 2011 MacBook Pro 13″, this is how i got past it and got Lion up and running.

Installed from my SL partition and it hanged on the first reboot. I restarted and held ALT until the boot options show then selected my new Lion partition (without pressing enter) and held CMD+S and pressed enter. Booting in safe mode got me through the whole installation process but then on the next reboot it hangs again due to the same IO80211Family.kext problems as in Preview 3. Just installed the Preview 2 update 1 kext and it’s ok.

I can’t believe that Apple has not fixed this problem considering that a lot of people reported this even after update 2 and more after update 3”

  16. Tony Stark says:

no problems installing on macbook pro 2010 13″.

definitely has a polished gm feel. the search function that wasn’t working in outlook 2011 (spotlight issue) fixed. new icon for launchpad.

    • Matt Menard says:

hi, i see you said the search function was fixed but i downloaded Lion this morning and when i search by name, subject, etc…in Outlook, it doesn’t find any emails prior to Lion installation. Do you have any insight into why this is or how to fix it? thank you

  19. Alan says:

Tom, do you have a 2011 MacBook Pro?

    • Tom Davey says:

Yep, 17″ i7….I remember the DP3 had a problem, I had to delete the wifi .kext in the Extensions folder to get it to boot. But it installed OK….

      • Alan says:

it seems it can not install on MacBook Pro 2011 machines. also, did you try disabling filevault before upgrading?

        • Gravol says:

I did not upgrade, fresh install on a separate partition.

It’s supposed to ship next month and can’t be installed on their own newest machines without messing around??! Hmmm…

          • rob says:

you do realize they might have left it like that on purpose, to prevent non-developers from messing around with it too much. (They can always post the solution on the internal message board).

      • A. Janssen says:

Do you have found a solution to install developer preview 4? Because i’m trying 24 hours now and going crazy:(

  20. Tom Davey says:

In a follow up to my previous comment (not showing up yet for some reason) here is the process I go through:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwK-o2EjAkw

  21. Tom Davey says:

I wiped my Lion partition to just start fresh. Went onto my SL partition and started installer DMG from there. Looked very polished and GM like. Restarted without an issue until I got to the installer page. As the screen booted up through the blue, the graphics severely glitched, but then the installer window came up with the blue candybar bar which moved about to steps at a stuttery frame rate, if you will. It then froze. I have rebooted into SL, repeated with a wipe of the Lion partition, still no go. Any ideas ladies?

  22. Perry hacker says:

My install will not work either. I get endless spinning gear after it restarts. Safe mode brings me back to dp3

  23. PeterW says:

I have a developer license and downloaded from the App Store last night – it took overnight to do it which is what I expected.

However I have preview 3 and I tried to install this morning and it errored. So I’m not sure if others have been successful.

  24. johnny says:

Yes someone please tell me where to get it from. is it on newsgroups yet?

  25. Alan says:

Peter, how did you get it, please?

  26. PeterW says:

I got the latest preview 4 and tried to install this morning and I got an install error. Not what I was expecting.

Any one else had that issue?

    • rob says:

I had an error too. Turn on the log and take a look. If you have the same issue as me, you will see a disk error. So I booted up in the recovery partition, and ran the disk utility on the main disk and repaired it. Then I rebooted back to the normal start-up disk, and ran the installer again – the second time, it worked.
