Send & Receive Animated GIFs in Messages on iPhone

Dancing Banana animated GIF A fun little-known feature of Messages for iOS is that it supports animated gifs, meaning you can send and receive those quirky moving web graphics that were so popular in 1996 and are currently enjoying a resurgence on the web. The only requirement for this feature to work is that both you and the recipient have iMessage configured on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, beyond that it works in all new versions of iOS. And yes, you can also send animated GIF to Android users too this way, it just sends as a regular media message.

There really isn’t much to this. All you need to do is find an animated GIF you want to share with someone with Safari (like the animated dancing banana on this very page), and then do the following:

How to Send Animated GIFs with iMessage on iPhone

  1. Locate an animated GIF you want to send to someone via Messages app in iOS (the dancing banana GIF below, for example)
  2. Dancing Banana animated GIF

  3. Tap and hold on the animated gif, then choose “Copy” to save it to the clipboard of the iPhone
  4. Copy the animated GIF you want to send in messages

  5. Open the Messages app as usual, and choose the recipient you wish to send the animated GIF to
  6. Messages

  7. In the input box, tap and hold, then choose “Paste” to insert the animated gif into the message
  8. Paste the animated GIF into the send input messages box

  9. Add some text if desired, or just tap on “Send” as usual to send the animated GIF in a message
  10. Send the animated GIF

You can try it yourself right now by reading this post from an iOS device, using the lovely dancing banana gif from AccuWeather as an example.

Sending animated GIF in Messages on iPhone

Obviously this banana is so good that I had to share it with someone else.

Once the gif has been pasted and/or sent, it will immediately start animating in the chat message.

This feature works in all versions of Messages for iOS, from the latest releases to the older versions too. Here’s what it looks like in prior iOS Messages app:

Copy an animated GIF to clipboard for sending it through Messages

The gif animation plays in the Messages window the same for both the sender and the recipient.

Send animated GIFs on the iPhone through Messages app

You can also save the animated gif to the camera roll for future access through Photos app, though it’s not necessary to do that if you’re just looking to send one out. You will find that gifs do not animate when they are stored in Camera Roll however, thus to get it to become animated again you would need to place it into a new iMessage.

If you’d rather make your own animated gifs on the iPhone, you can do so directly on the iPhone using a variety of apps. One easy to use and powerful free app for this purpose is GifMill, which makes it easy to convert any video into an animated gif, and also provides editing tools if you want to spruce up your animated gif, delete frames, add filters, or text layovers. You can learn how to make animated GIFs with GifMill here.

Adding animated gifs into messages is definitely fun, but remember that multimedia heavy message threads can grow quite large and need to be removed from time to time, or else the Other storage can grow to unreasonable sizes on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

I’ve been successfully doing this all along, but suddenly something went wrong. I can send the animation but the image is NOT animated when received. I tried this by sending to myself: the animation works when sent, but I receive the The STILL image. This is recent. I must have changed something but not sure what I did…
