Classic Western Art Modernized with iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks
What if the Edvard Munch expressionist classic The Scream was really a reaction to a broken iPhone screen? What if A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte was modernized for the 21st century, what would that Sunday afternoon look like now? What if The Card Players were actually just two guys staring at their iPhone screens? And what if The Last Supper by Da Vinci was filled with the apostles fiddling around on their Apple gear? If all of that sounds ludicrous, we’re in agreement, but that’s exactly what these amusingly updated (some may say ruined) classics show us.
The creations of artist Kim Dong-Kyu, the modifications are made to include iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, white earbuds, even Beats headphones, all inserted into classic pieces of western art by Manet, Picasso, Munch, Renoir, Hopper, and plenty of other famous works. All works have been updated to reflect our modern tendencies, showing the subjects glued to their screens, taking selfies, and otherwise worshipping the digital.
Check out a sampling below, and be sure to check out Kim Dong-Kyu’s Tumblr page for even more of these, they’re pretty great and make an interesting point about our digital habits. However you feel about modern and classical art, you should get a kick out of these fun images.
Heads up to BoingBoing for the hilarious find.
Been photographing statues of St. Vincent de Paul with laptops and cell phones since 2001. Vincent wrote something like 30,000 letters in his day (17th century France) — imagine him with email and texting.
cut-paste-Lame….
just ripped off banksy…
I especially love the one with the person apparently shrieking in horror over the broken iPhone. Is Jesus using an old flip phone? Looks like a Motorola Razor. I think these doctored portraits prove more than anything that we are obsessed with our mobile devices.
