Mac setup, workstation of computer repair and web design business owner

This weeks featured Mac setup is the excellent workstation of small business owner Cory C., let’s jump right in and learn more:

What do you use your Apple gear for?

I provide computer repair and web design through my business, Tech4Eleven (http://tech4eleven.com), so all the Apple gear really comes in handy.

What hardware is included in your Mac setup?

I bought my MacBook 15″ Pro in early 2013, straight from Apple since I wanted it customized to fit my needs. It’s a 15.4”, 2.6Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8GB Ram. It sports an upgraded 1TB Hybrid Drive and a 1680×1050 display.

Connected to the laptop is a Kensington Sd3500v USB 3.0 Universal Docking Station which runs 1 of the 23″ LG IPS235 displays, the Logitech Speaker system and allows for more USB connections. The other 23” LG IPS235 display connects directly to the laptop via mini-display port. The LG monitors are held up by a free standing, horizontal, dual monitor mount by EasyMountLCD.

The mStand Laptop Stand supports the Macbook Pro.

Gracing center stage is a 64Gb iPhone 6+.

Also on my desk is a Wacom Intuos pen & touch small pen tablet, a Plantronics M155 MARQUE Bluetooth Headset, Mobee Technology Magic Charger for the Apple Magic Mouse and a 1st generation Pebble Smartwatch . Providing the keys is the Logitech K750 Wireless Solar Powered Keyboard. And of course, the Apple Magic Mouse does all the pointing and clicking. Printing and scanning provided by a humble Canon MG3120.

I just finished building the desk and pallet wall this weekend. The desk is a solid 10 feet of amazing desk space. Allows for room for all my gear and paperwork, my wife’s 13” Macbook Pro and the Canon printer.

I’ve added to and adjusted this setup since 2013. I love the screen real estate as I’m easily able to see all the programs I have running all the time.

What apps do you use most often for Mac? And for iOS?

For OS X, I heavily use the stock apps: mail, messages, calendar, reminders, and Safari. On top of those, I can’t live with out Adobe BracketsText Wrangler, Wanderlist, Evernote, Transmit FTP, Google Hangouts, copyclip, Pochade, Spotify, and, of course, Adobe Creative Suite CS6.

For iOS, reminders, calendar and Safari. I use Spark for my email, instagram, Spotify, Clipboard, Hangouts, MacHash news, Flipboard, and of course, Crossy Road.

Does driving the secondary display through the USB hub slow it down?

I use a single external display through the HDMI output on my MacBook Pro Retina, love it.

Yes it does unfortunately. And that display will out right not work with El Capitan as of now. But I just put stuff like Google Hangouts and Spotify over there. Or stuff that I just need to see and not work in. But i get other nice stuff with the dock: usb ports, audio, ethernet…all via 1 usb 3 port.
