MacOS Catalina beta

Apple has released MacOS Catalina 10.15 beta 5 to users enrolled in the developer beta testing program. A developer beta release usually arrives first and is soon followed by the accompanying public beta build.

Separately, Apple has released downloads for iOS 13 beta 5 and ipadOS 13 beta 5 for beta testers, along with new beta builds for tvOS and watchOS.

Mac users who are currently running MacOS Catalina developer beta can find the latest fifth beta available to download now from Software Update in the System Preferences panel on their Mac.

As always, backup a Mac before installing any system software version. Backing up is extra important when running beta software.

MacOS Catalina includes various new features for the Mac, including updates to bundled apps like Photos, Notes and Reminders, an ability to use iPad as a secondary display for the Mac, the splitting of iTunes into three separate apps for Music, TV, and Podcasts, the moving of iOS device management to Finder, a new screen saver option, tightened security, the lack of support for 32-bit apps, and much more.

Technically speaking, any Mac user can choose to become a beta tester for MacOS Catalina, either by paying the annual membership fee to join the developer program, or by enrolling in the free public beta testing program.

Savvy users can learn how to install MacOS Catalina public beta here if that interests you, but be forewarned that beta testing any system software is only appropriate for advanced users, with sufficient backups of all data, and preferably on secondary computers and hardware.

Likewise, it’s possible to beta test iOS and iPadOS 13 too, and interested advanced users can read how to install iPadOS 13 public beta and follow a guide to install iOS 13 public beta on iPhone too if doing so compels them.

Apple has stated the final version of MacOS Catalina will be available to the general public in the fall of 2019, likely in the same time frame as the final versions of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.

I am having an issue as well. The last beta I had the logo issue and ended up leaving it and it eventually completed the installation. After 20 or so hours.

Same issue this time but after 3 hours I rebooted and did a PRAM reset. It’s been sitting at 35 minutes remaining since last night.

    Hoping it will eventually resolve….

I found the solution to the install working… if the install is dragging and after resetting it a few times the solution is if the reset does not do the trick reset and use the shift key… that does he trick and you get the 9 minute countdown.

    • makemineamac says:

So Robert you got yours to complete?

I tried the shift reset and still nothing. At the 35 minutes remaining still.

May leave it one more night.

Yes, the install took about another hour to complete but it eventually worked. I am kinda annoyed as this is the second time the beta has done this… I never use beta’s for iphone, but never had any issues with the Mac Software… the fact that it is happening to other people… WTF Apple!

  3. Robert says:

Yes, John same thing is happening to me!

  4. Robert says:

Once again I am having issues with this install as it’s stalled and just seeing the Apple logo and no time in status bar…. thoughts?

  5. Ken says:

I was a beta tester for many years until I realized that running a beta is like seeing your grandmother in her underwear. You can never unsee it, and you won’t enjoy the final product as much as if you had waited.

  6. John says:

Dev Beta has downloaded; but I cannot install it. The process stuck at the install/update etc. point. I cannot press install/update etc. button (pane freezes) The same happens at Apple ID menu or in security/privacy. Any idea, how can I solve the issue? Thank you
