tvOS 14 Compatibility List

tvOS 14 is coming for Apple TV later in the year, and you might be wondering which exact Apple TV models are capable of running the tvOS 14 update.

From being able to finally play YouTube videos in 4K to key features like picture-in-picture mode, Apple TV owners have all the reasons to be excited about tvOS 14. Unlike iPhones, iPad, and Macs, there aren’t a lot of Apple TV models, so you can expect this compatibility list to be pretty short.

Trying to figure out if your Apple TV is capable of running the latest tvOS update when it comes out this fall? Don’t worry, we’re here to help.

tvOS 14 Compatibility List

Here’s a list of all the Apple TV models that are capable of running tvOS 14 officially when it comes out, as confirmed by Apple on their website. Although there aren’t many models to cover, if your Apple TV is several years old, there’s a fair chance that it will not support the upcoming version of tvOS.

Apple TVs Compatible with tvOS 14

  • Apple TV HD (4th generation)
  • Apple TV 4K (5th generation)

Unsupported Apple TV Models

  • Apple TV (1st generation)
  • Apple TV (2nd generation)
  • Apple TV (3rd generation)

If you usually keep an eye on tvOS software updates, you’ll notice that the compatibility list is exactly the same as the list of devices that support tvOS 13. Therefore, if your Apple TV is currently running tvOS 13, you’re all set for the upcoming update.

That being said, if you didn’t find your Apple TV model in this compatibility list, then it means that you own a model that was released before 2015. These Apple TV models run an older Apple TV software rather than tvOS and hence, not supported by Apple for tvOS 14.

Found your Apple TV in the list of supported devices and can’t wait to try out tvOS 14? Well, if you’re impatient to wait for the final release, you can sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program and be eligible to install tvOS 14 public beta when Apple releases it, that process is basically the same as enrolling in the iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 public beta for the curious. Or, if you’re part of the Apple Developer Program, you can try out tvOS 14 developer beta right now too.

Be careful when you install beta software on your Apple TV though, as these are experimental versions and not a stable release. Both the developer and public beta versions usually have stability issues and bugs that may prevent the software and installed apps from functioning effectively.

We hope you were able to find your Apple TV in the compatibility list. If not, which Apple TV model do you currently own? Are you looking to upgrade to an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K to access tvOS features? Do share your valuable thoughts and opinions in the comments section down below.
