Apple Event set for May 7

Apple has set an online event for 7:00AM PST on Tuesday, May 7, for the early birds on the west coast, or mid-morning east coast folks.

While Apple offers only a vague hint of what’s to come with the event artwork, the rumor mill speculates that updated iPad models will be revealed that feature the M2 or M3 processor, perhaps alongside an updated Apple pencil, and new Magic Keyboard accessory case. One of the event artwork pieces shows a hand holding and twirling an Apple Pencil, which is obviously suggestive of the iPad and Apple Pencil, providing a distinct clue as to the events focus.

Aside from updated iPad models and perhaps a new Apple Pencil and iPad Magic Keyboard, it’s also likely that current beta versions of system software will be finalized by then. That could mean that iOS 17.5, ipadOS 17.5, macOS Sonoma 14.5, and other associated software updates for Apple devices, would be released as software updates to the broad public either on that day, or that week. Take everything with a grain of salt, though, as rumors and speculation are just that – rumors and speculation.

The event will be livestreamed on Apple.com and through YouTube, and you can set a reminder by adding it to your calendar, or watch it online at Apple.com Events page.

I don’t get the rumored models coming out. Seems more about Apple finding ways to increase profit markets. I would bet they drop the 9th gen base model finally. Personally, I don’t think a 12 inch iPad Air makes sense. Not when you already have a Pro model in that size. The Air has always meant light and portable.

I think they should release a 15″ iPad since it would be intriguing, but the biggest issue with iPad in my mind is that iPadOS is limiting, especially for the price of these devices. The iPad has the same M-chips as Macs do, so I think they should be able to switch from MacOS when connected to a keyboard or external display, AND/OR iPadOS either in touch mode or when connected to other devices. It has the power and potential capabilities, let’s use them!

My iPad is mostly a couch browser, so a 13″ Air would be fine with me, and I prefer LCD to OLED displays for eyestrain reasons so I hope that pans out, since LCD is much softer on the eyes with higher refresh rates.

Overall I do think the iPad lineup is confusing and makes it hard to shop. It should just be three basic models; iPad mini, iPad, iPad Pro. The “Air” is not particularly light or thin, so it’s a goofy name for the mid-range, so just call that the iPad. Price it at $399 for 11″ and $499 for 13″. iPad Pro is too expensive IMO given you can get a more capable Mac for less, so price the iPad Pro less too, $699 for 11″ and $799″ for 13″, $899 for 15″.
