Updated Version of iOS 17.6.1 & iPad 17.6.1 Released

iOS 17.6.1 and iPadOS 17.6.1

Apple has re-released iOS 17.6.1 for iPhone and iPadOS 17.6.1 for iPad. The new build number is 21G101 for iOS 17.6.1, while the old build number was 21G93.

It is unclear what is different about the new build, or why Apple didn’t label this update as iOS 17.6.2. Additionally, the new build is not listed on Apple’s security updates page (yet anyway), further adding to the mystery.

Separately, Apple has released watchOS 10.6.1 and tvOS 17.6.1 for Apple Watch and Apple TV.

How to Update to iOS 17.6.1 & iPadOS 17.6.1, Again

As usual, start by backing up your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Open the “Settings” app on iPhone or iPad
  2. Go to “General”, then go to “Software Update”
  3. Choose to “Update Now” to download and install iOS 17.6.1 or iPadOS 17.6.1

The iPhone or iPad will restart to finish installation.

If you have an Apple TV or Apple Watch, those devices can be updated through their respective software update mechanisms as well.

Advanced users can use IPSW files to update their devices, but for most people the best way to update is directly on the device using the Settings method outlined above.

Any chance the provided links need doctoring. The links do not load. Just claims updating, but does not.

Hoping to download iPadOS 17.6.1, before the certificates expire.

  2. John says:

I got the update for the update which is weird by itself. But it’s a mess on my iPad Air M2 with Safari hangs, much worse battery life, and other sort of buggy unstable experiences. Did they fix anything? Or just made other things worse?

  3. Carole says:

Same here — iPhone 15 and iPad 5th gen both show as “up to date.”

    • ian says:

Apparently if you already were on iOS 17.6.1 then you won’t find the new version, so whatever was changed was not significant enough for Apple to bother for everyone

    • Eugene says:

check backup by cable with your Mac, and the updated version will show up asap ..

  4. robertD says:

This is a strange one. This update never showed up for our iPhones or our iPads, what’s the scoop?

  5. John says:

I dutifully updated my iPhone and iPad Pro through my Mac, and my AppleTV via OTA.

The release notes state that these revisions were related to Apple Fitness, so if you’re not a user of that service, there may not be any sort of need.

Apple may have very good reasons to not increment the version number, and reissue updates with the same point number, but it would certainly help users, if it respects them as much as the company proclaims to, by simply offering clear, concise public statements as to what/who/why needs and gets updates such as this, and not leave users guessing.

That also applies to the length of Mac OS support windows as well, with “current +2” being an understanding through observation, not any sort of official guideline from Apple. It does offer specific timelines with its hardware (“vintage,” “obsolete,” etc.), so why not software?

  6. Chris says:

My 2 iPads (Pro 11″) and iPhone 13 Pro Max are all saying OS Version Up to Date (21G93) and no new Update showing to be available.

  7. Jack says:

    Both devices reported uptodate.
Who is running the show there?

  8. Maddie says:

Tried updating my AppleTV earlier today & seemed to go through the process, however, I checked afterward & it said it was updated to 17.6 but not 17.6.1. Odd.

  9. Joe says:

Tried to update my iPhone 12 Pro Max to the new iOS 17.6.1. My phone said my software was up to date.

  10. No update says:

The reissued update doesn’t seem to be available on either an iphone 11 or 14 that already had 17.6.1 installed. Is this expected?

  11. John says:

Wifi seems kind of flaky on my iPad Air M2.
