Voice Memos on Mac defaults to naming new voice memos by location but you can change that

The Voice Memos app is incredibly useful on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, but one thing that some users may wish to change is the Location Based Naming system that is automatically active with any created Voice Memos. We’ve previously discussed disabling location-based voice memo naming on iPhone and iPad before, but now we’re going to cover the same tip for Mac users.

How to Disable Location-based Naming of Voice Memos on Mac

If you’d like to turn off the automatic location based naming system in Voice Memos on Mac, here’s how:

  1. Open the “Voice Memos” app on Mac
  2. Pull down the Voice Memos menu and choose “Settings”
  3. Toggle the checkbox for “Location-based naming” so that its OFF
  4. How to disable location based naming on Voice Memos for Mac

If you have ever noticed that Voice Memos is using your location, this setting and feature is probably why.

Location-based naming can be very useful for many situations, particularly if you’re creating lots of different voice memos in different locations for a particular job or hobby, for example an appraiser or real estate agent may find this to be a fantastic feature, as may a bird watcher or berry picker, but the feature can get a little overwhelming if you’re mostly using voice memos in a single location that does not change, in which case every voice memo will be called something like “Santa Cruz”, Santa Cruz 1, Santa Cruz 2, Santa Cruz 3, Santa Cruz 4, Santa Cruz 5, etc etc.

How to Enable Location-based Naming of Voice Memos on Mac

If this feature was turned off and you wish to enable it again, that’s just as easy:

  1. Open the “Voice Memos” app on Mac
  2. Pull down the Voice Memos menu and choose “Settings”
  3. Toggle the checkbox for “Location-based naming” so that its in the ON position

Again you can do the same on iPhone and iPad Voice Memos if you’d like to, just set it to whatever you prefer whether that is location naming on or off.
