iPhone 5 Will Have Smaller Dock Connector
The next iPhone will feature a smaller dock connector and the headphone jack will be relocated to the bottom of the device, according to a new report from Reuters. This appears to confirm what is shown in the alleged pictures of iPhone 5 that were leaked to 9to5mac a few months ago.
Changing the dock connector is a potentially significant move because it may render previous chargers and accessories useless without an adapter. In a similar fashion, Apple recently changed the MagSafe adapters on new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, and though it’s unlikely Macs will share their power adapter with future iOS devices it is always possible that MagSafe technology will come to the iPhone connector.
iPhone 5 is expected to launch sometime this fall alongside iOS 6, and feature a redesigned enclosure, larger 4″ display, and various other rumored improvements.
They better make that thing mag safe. It’s been long overdue.
Changing the dock can possibly mean a lot more money for apple and people who make apple products. I have a feeling this won’t deter to many people from buying the new iphone, but it will increase the sells of accessories since the need for them will be very high.
AFAIR EU comission forced Apple and other vendors to prepare universal USB connector. So, does that mean it will arrive in new iPhone?
The new slick design is nice, but I hate the fact that they had to change the dock connecter. The one of the reason why I love Apple because every house you go to, someone has to have either an iPhone or iPod etc. Which makes it easier for you to charge your phone. If they are going to sell an adapter, what is the point of doing that. Why can’t they just implement that in the new iPhone 5?
So my $300 Bose dock will be useless? Way to go, Apple.
Nah, just use AUX cables for the audio. I have to do this right now with a $200 speaker set I got for the original iPhone that doesn’t work with iPhone 4, but AUX is fine.
Headphone socket on the bottom, so if you want to keep your iphone in your pocket and listen to music you have turn it upside down or you will bend your headphone cable.
Then when you want to make or accept a call you have turn the phone the right way round and when your finished turn it upside again.
Not exactly convenient.
If it’s upside down in your pocket, grabbing it and putting it to your ear is made possible by the bending of your elbow, plus the earphone cable is out of the way.
Seems more sensible to me.
Annoying but it’s been around for 10 years or so, do we really expect Apple to use decades old technology? This isn’t a PC, this is an iPhone.
Agreed, sometimes you just gotta cut some stuff off. The current connector has had it’s run, and it’s time to move on.
I guess I don’t care too much because for audio adapters we can still use AUX and I’m sure the battery will be better so I can just charge it overnight.
